Worried about keeping your garden looking lush and lively during El Niño? Don’t be. A few simple steps are all it takes to make sure it stays beautiful and full of life. With Garden Day officially launched on Sunday, 18 October, now’s the perfect time to get your garden summer-ready.

Craig De Necker of the garden design and landscape installation company, The Friendly Plant, says that summer can be a difficult time for garden enthusiasts. Throw in unpredictable water cuts, a particularly dry, hot season and the rising cost of water, and it’s easy to see why they’re worried about gardens that are gasping. For those going way over the holidays, the worry doubles.

Here are his tips for keeping your garden looking its best:

Be water-wise

1. Consider replacing thirsty plants with succulents; making sure your garden is water-wise.

2. Although they need very little maintenance, the correct watering method can make a drastic difference to the health of succulents. De Necker recommends a drip irrigation system, which delivers water deep into the soil where it reaches the roots more easily.

This matters because this is the part of the plant which is able to absorb water. Watering more deeply actually cuts down on the frequency of irrigation, because it helps absorption; plus, the water will evaporate at a far lower rate than with sprays.

3. Water early or late. Johannesburg Water is asking residents to water gardens only before 6am or after 6pm. Less water is lost to evaporation, and your plants get more of every drop.

Water smarter

4. Make sure to adjust your watering technique for sensitive plants, like bonsais or orchids, which need a lot of care.

5. Look out for signs of underwatering, where leaves become dry and brittle.

6. Be careful of overwatering. Look out for drooping leaves. Avoid this by testing the condition of the soil often: although it should not feel dry, it shouldn’t feel muddy, either.

7. Take time to check your irrigation system is working, looking out for any breaks or blockages. If possible, invest in a Wi-Fi-controlled system, so that you can adjust the settings according to the day’s weather, even if you’re nowhere near home. For example, if you know there’s a heatwave coming, run the system for a little while longer; if storms are predicted, you can put the system on hold to prevent overwatering.

Heading away?

8. Use dead leaves or bark chips as mulch. This will insulate the soil while also helping it retain water while you’re away.

9. To keep potted plants looking good while you’re away, give them a thorough soaking before you leave.

10. It’s also wise to check the placement of your potted plants. Pots are often positioned in a way that means they don’t get the full benefit of rain, especially if they are under a roof or against a wall.

As a destination is remembered by the flavours it leaves behind, so too can gastronomy offer travellers a deeply personal way to experience the people, culture and stories that make South Africa unforgettable.

Today South African Tourism will join chefs, restaurateurs, food producers, hospitality professionals and tourism leaders at the two-day Gastronomy Africa Conference & Expo, starting on Monday 19 October until Tuesday 20 October 2026 in uMhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal.

Formerly known as the SA Chef Conference & Expo, the event has evolved into a pan-African platform exploring the business of food, including culinary heritage, indigenous ingredients, responsible sourcing, skills development and gastronomy tourism.

For South African Tourism, the participation comes at a time when visitor insights point to an opportunity to strengthen the role of food in the tourism experience, moving beyond dining as a supporting activity to positioning it as a compelling reason to explore South Africa.

Research by Data Appeal, analysing more than 1.3 million reviews from international travellers between September 2025 and September 2026, found that South Africa’s Food & Beverage sector recorded an overall sentiment score of 90.7 out of 100.

Sithembile Ndaba, Chief Marketing Officer at South African Tourism, says the findings reinforce the opportunity to translate positive visitor experiences into a stronger, more commercially viable tourism offering.

“The data tells us that food is already performing as a meaningful part of the South African visitor experience. Our opportunity now is to be much more deliberate about turning that strength into a tourism proposition that can be packaged, marketed and sold.”

“What is particularly significant is that the strongest part of the story is not only what visitors are eating, but how they are being welcomed. South Africa’s people are part of the product. Every interaction in a restaurant is an opportunity to reinforce the warmth, authenticity and sense of place that we want international visitors to associate with South Africa,” says Ndaba.

This presents an opportunity for tour operators, destination management companies, accommodation establishments and itinerary planners to incorporate distinctive food experiences more intentionally into visitor itineraries. From traditional cuisine and township food experiences to wine routes, local markets and contemporary African dining, gastronomy can encourage travellers to discover more places, engage more deeply with communities and support local enterprises.

South African Tourism’s participation also supports the development and promotion of gastronomy tourism in line with the Department of Tourism’s 2023 National Gastronomy Tourism Framework.

Through its engagement with the sector, South African Tourism aims to strengthen the connection between the work of chefs, restaurants, food producers and tourism entrepreneurs and the international travellers and trade partners who can help bring these experiences to market. The platform also provides an opportunity to identify the support needed to enhance visitor experiences, improve market readiness and develop offerings that can compete internationally.

By positioning food as an integral part of the destination experience, South African Tourism seeks to unlock new opportunities for tourism businesses, support broader economic participation and invite the world to discover South Africa’s flavours, cultures and communities.

The scene was set, and PR specialists Deolinda De Costa and Kaelin Dryer were in high spirits as media prepared to sample the new CX-5. I’ll admit, I was excited too.

It’s good to see Mazda pushing the envelope. Yes, sales are another story, and it’s a mighty battle for the Japanese marque amid the influx of newer Chinese entrants giving established players a run for their money.

But here’s my two cents: Mazda is a brand backed by a strong reputation, quality-driven engineering and the promise of long-term reliability. As I can attest, our 11-year-old Mazda3 Astina is still going strong without breaking a sweat. So, what can consumers look forward to?

Refreshed Design

The new CX-5 features a more sculpted and sophisticated exterior while maintaining the SUV’s familiar proportions. Mazda has also introduced a new colour option, Navy Blue Mica, which makes its global debut on the CX-5.

The SUV’s design updates are not purely cosmetic. Engineers have refined airflow management around the vehicle to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce drag, despite the model’s larger dimensions.

More Space and Technology Inside

Inside, everything is fully digital. Mazda has ditched the classic rotary dial, and there are hardly any physical buttons left, much to the disappointment of purists who prefer function over flash.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, alongside a fully digital instrument cluster and Mazda’s latest Human Machine Interface (HMI) system. The cabin also features improved sound-insulating materials for a quieter driving experience.

Rear passengers benefit from increased knee and headroom, while a wider rear-door opening makes getting in and out easier.

The flagship CX-5 Homura derivative adds a large 15.5-inch infotainment display, electrostatic steering-wheel controls and additional driver-monitoring technology.

Family-Friendly Practicality

Mazda has improved the CX-5’s practicality with a larger luggage compartment that can accommodate up to 964 litres with the rear seats folded.

Other convenience features include:

• 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats

• Lower loading height

• Hands-free tailgate

• Flat cargo floor for easier loading

• Convenient seat-release levers in the luggage area

These additions make the SUV better suited to family trips, sporting activities and everyday transport needs.

Safety Takes Centre Stage

The all-new CX-5 has earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, achieving strong scores across adult occupant, child occupant and vulnerable road user protection categories.

Safety technologies include:

• 360-degree camera system

• Blind Spot Monitoring

• Lane Change Assist

• Mazda Radar Cruise Control

• Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

Drive, Handling and Final Thoughts

On the road, my colleague and I drove the CX-5 around Muldersdrift, and it proved to be a sweet cruiser. The CX-5 is a cushy, comfortable steed that handles bends with confidence.

Yes, the familiar 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine leaves room for a little more power and can get noisy when you put your foot down. However, its 132kW and 240Nm are more than adequate for the daily commute. I averaged around 9l/100km during the launch drive. Mazda has also refined the suspension to improve ride comfort and stability.

The new CX-5 is backed by MazdaCare, which includes:

• Five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty

• Five-year/unlimited-kilometre service plan

• Five years of roadside assistance

So, the Mazda CX-5 may seem like a simple recipe, but I’d say think of it as one that’s been refined over time. It’s better, more polished and, rest assured, it delivers where it counts.

Pricing for the new Mazda CX-5 starts at R578,250 for the 2.5 Active FWD, rising to R749,100 for the range-topping 2.5 Homura AWD. If you’re in the market for a family SUV that prioritises comfort, practicality and quality, the new CX-5 deserves a spot on your shortlist. Go out and buy one!

Positioned as a smaller, more accessible member of the Land Cruiser family, the FJ blends retro-inspired styling with modern technology and off-road capability. After spending time behind the wheel, I came away appreciating what Toyota has created, but also feeling that it’s not quite the complete package just yet.

The first thing that strikes you is the styling. Our top-spec VX test unit, priced at R769,000, certainly had presence. Body cladding appears almost everywhere you look, along with chunky off-road tyres and rugged proportions that immediately communicate its adventurous intentions.

From certain angles, especially around the rear, the dimensions can appear a little awkward. However, that’s part of the vehicle’s charm. What Toyota has done well is tap into the nostalgia surrounding the original FJ Cruiser. Let’s get one thing out of the way, though: this is not a direct successor to that iconic model. Instead, it borrows elements from the past while carving out its own identity.

Step inside, and the theme continues. Toyota focused on creating a functional, easy-to-use environment. It offers plenty of physical controls and useful storage compartments. It’s modern enough to feel current but simple to operate without requiring a tutorial.

I will admit, the equipment levels are dim and lacking polish. The parking camera system feels disappointingly dated. Image quality falls short of expectations, especially considering the asking price. Toyota’s setup feels overdue for an upgrade. Driver aids included: adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and seven airbags.

Unfortunately, another criticism of the FJ emerges once you hit the road. Let’s start with the positives. Venture away from the tar and onto rough terrain, and the FJ feels at home. It tackles dirt roads, gravel tracks and uneven surfaces with the confidence you’d expect from something wearing a Land Cruiser badge. The problem isn’t capability.

The problem is power. Under the bonnet sits Toyota’s familiar 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 122kW and 245 Nm of torque. While the powerplant has earned a reputation for reliability, it feels somewhat underwhelming in a vehicle of this size and weight.

When you demand more performance, during overtaking manoeuvres or highway driving, the engine starts to feel strained. You find yourself wishing for additional torque and stronger mid-range performance.

Fuel consumption doesn’t help the cause either. During my time with the vehicle, I averaged around 15 L/100 km.

This is why I believe Toyota has a relatively simple solution. Give it the legendary 2GD-FTV diesel engine. That powerplant has already proven itself across various Toyota products and would likely transform the FJ’s driving characteristics. Greater torque, improved drivability and better real-world efficiency would address many of my concerns.

Against rivals such as the Tank 300, Isuzu MU-X and Ford Everest, the Land Cruiser FJ needs to keep up.

But to play devil's advocate, it may not lead the class in performance or luxury, but it offers something many competitors struggle to replicate: Toyota’s reputation for long-term reliability and durability.

For many buyers, that’s worth its weight in gold. A diesel variant could be the missing piece of the puzzle. Until then, the FJ remains a likeable off-roader, even if it doesn’t completely satisfy when you put your foot down and misses the mark in tech.

Kia’s first-ever bakkie has arrived with unique styling that evokes mixed emotions. You want to like it, but this oddly cute steed leaves you wondering whether it’s a looker. Sure, its whale-like proportions may leave some motorists uncertain, but this bakkie has more than just its looks. Its premium cabin and refined driving experience left a lasting impression.

The Tasman clearly aims to challenge the segment’s established leaders. After spending time behind the wheel, it's clear the Tasman brings something refreshingly different to the bakkie segment.

A Design That Grows on You

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the styling. Its unconventional design has proven divisive, but seeing it in person tells a different story. Oddly enough, the Tasman comes across as almost cute. Its broad stance, widely spaced headlights, and rounded proportions create a distinctive, friendly appearance.

Yet beneath that approachable look is a vehicle that also projects a rugged, military-inspired character. Kia has a history of producing utilitarian vehicles, and some of that influence appears to have found its way into the Tasman’s design language.

Our test vehicle featured black alloy wheels wrapped in chunky tyres, a beige exterior finish and substantial body cladding. Together, these elements reinforced the Tasman’s adventurous personality.

It is also a sizeable bakkie. Parked alongside more familiar rivals, the Tasman’s dimensions become immediately noticeable. For context, it is about 90 mm longer than the Toyota Hilux.

Whether you love it or hate it will ultimately come down to personal taste. Initially, I wasn’t completely sold on the design, but after spending more time with the vehicle, it began to grow on me.

Setting a New Standard Inside

If the exterior divides opinion, the interior is where the Tasman wins people over. Frankly, it is class-leading. For years, the current-generation Ford Ranger has set the benchmark for premium bakkie interiors, but the Tasman may have just raised the bar. From the moment you climb inside, the emphasis on comfort and quality is immediately apparent.

Dual digital screens dominate the dashboard, while the blocky steering wheel adds a modern touch. It also offers heated and ventilated front seats, plus a heated steering wheel to make those cold winter mornings a little more bearable.

As far as comfort goes, the leatherette upholstery is plush, creating an environment that feels far more SUV than workhorse. A Harman Kardon sound system delivers crisp audio quality, while the spacious layout gives occupants plenty of room to stretch out.

The cabin feels airy. Fit and finish are commendable throughout, and the level of standard equipment is exactly what buyers expect from a modern premium bakkie. Naturally, the Tasman also comes loaded with advanced driver-assistance and safety technologies, making it a thoroughly modern offering.

Refined Diesel Performance

Kia’s familiar 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine powers the Tasman, producing 154kW and 440Nm of torque. On paper, those figures may not sound exciting. The engine delivers power smoothly, while the automatic gearbox responds quickly. Compared with some rivals, such as the Isuzu D-Max, which can feel agricultural, the Tasman’s drivetrain feels notably more refined.

That said, I still believe the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok offer a more polished driving experience. The Tasman comfortably sits just behind those segment leaders.

One of its greatest strengths is how un-bakkie-like it feels. Where some competitors can feel rough around the edges, the Tasman delivers a more polished drive.

It cruises comfortably at motorway speeds and feels settled during everyday driving. Fuel consumption during testing averaged 11.9 litres per 100km. While not class-leading, the figure is broadly in line with what many buyers would expect from a large double-cab bakkie.

Off-road, the Tasman doesn’t break a sweat. With various terrain modes available, it feels capable when the road ends. I spent most of my time on gravel roads and light off-road trails, where the vehicle felt sturdy and confidence-inspiring. Its ladder-frame chassis is on the firmer side, but it never becomes uncomfortable. The torque delivery is ample, and overall, the Tasman feels like a very capable all-rounder.

Can It Challenge the Big Names?

Kia makes no secret of its intentions. The Tasman enters a market dominated by segment legends such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max. These are vehicles with loyal customer bases and decades of reputation behind them.

Yet the Tasman brings enough strengths to make buyers take notice. Pricing starts at around R670,000, while the flagship X-Pro derivative tested here comes in at approximately R1 million. That places it squarely in the heart of the premium bakkie market.

Verdict

The Kia Tasman may not appeal to everyone from a styling perspective, but that’s also part of its charm. Worth considering? Without a doubt.

Its familiar 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, shared with other Kia and Hyundai products globally, has built a solid reputation for durability and proven performance.

For buyers looking for something different, the Kia Tasman deserves a place on the shortlist.

SA Tourism is placing local tourism enterprises at the centre of its destination marketing efforts at the 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) in Nairobi, as visitor arrivals from Kenya continue to show steady growth.

The tourism authority is leading a delegation of 20 South African tourism businesses to the expo, held from 6 to 8 October at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi. Working alongside the South African National Convention Bureau (SANCB), the delegation is showcasing South Africa’s leisure, business events and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) offerings while creating new market access opportunities for small and emerging tourism businesses.

The delegation has grown from 17 businesses that participated in MKTE in 2025, reflecting SA Tourism’s commitment to strengthening its presence in East Africa through deeper trade partnerships, increased participation by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and a stronger focus on generating measurable commercial outcomes.

Turning tourism growth into business opportunities

The expanded presence comes against a backdrop of encouraging growth in arrivals from Kenya and across the African continent.

Between January and August 2026, South Africa welcomed 36,497 visitors from Kenya, representing a 7.7% increase compared with the same period in 2025. During the same period, arrivals from African markets reached 6,001,535, an increase of 13.4% year-on-year. Total international tourist arrivals stood at 7,581,455, marking an 11.7% increase.

Kenya remains one of South Africa’s most important source markets in East Africa, supported by direct air connectivity, growing economic ties and long-standing travel trade relationships. SA Tourism believes the market offers significant potential for further growth as more East African travellers seek leisure, business and conference experiences across the continent.

At MKTE, the organisation aims to strengthen relationships with tour operators, travel agents, wholesalers and destination management companies that influence travel decisions and package tourism products for consumers throughout East Africa.

The objective is not only to increase awareness of South Africa as a destination but also to ensure that South African tourism products are more visible, more accessible and easier to book through regional travel distribution channels.

South Africa’s tourism offering continues to enjoy international recognition. At the 2026 World Travel Awards Africa and Indian Ocean programme, South African destinations, tourism businesses and aviation partners secured 19 awards, including honours for Cape Town, Durban ICC and FlySafair. Tourism officials say such recognition reinforces the country’s reputation as a leading destination for both leisure and business travel.

Market access drives transformation

A central feature of this year’s programme is the increased representation of small and emerging tourism enterprises.

Of the 20 South African businesses participating in MKTE, 14 are MSMEs, compared with 10 MSMEs among the 17 businesses that attended the event last year. This means MSMEs now make up 70% of the South African delegation.

The increase reflects SA Tourism’s broader transformation agenda, which seeks to ensure that the benefits of tourism growth are shared more widely across the sector.

For many smaller businesses, international trade exhibitions provide a rare opportunity to engage directly with influential buyers, negotiate inclusion in travel itineraries and establish relationships that can generate business long after the event has concluded.

“Kenya is showing positive year-to-date growth, and that creates a real opportunity for our tourism businesses,” said Evelyn Mahlaba, Regional General Manager: Africa at SA Tourism.

“South African tourism products continue to earn recognition among the best on the continent, and MKTE gives us the opportunity to connect those world-class experiences directly with the buyers and distribution partners shaping travel decisions across East Africa. Our goal is to convert interest in South Africa into stronger distribution, more bookable tourism products and sustainable business opportunities for tourism businesses across our country.”

Mahlaba said smaller tourism operators often benefit significantly from direct exposure to international buyers.

“For a smaller tourism business, access to the right buyer can open up an entirely new market,” she said. “Our role is to help ensure promising South African tourism products have a fair opportunity to access regional buyers, secure itinerary inclusion and grow beyond their traditional markets.”

Building relationships beyond the exhibition floor

SA Tourism is extending its engagement beyond the official expo programme through a series of targeted networking activities.

On 7 October, the organisation hosted a networking dinner attended by approximately 100 travel trade professionals, MICE specialists and corporate travel stakeholders. The event provided an additional platform for relationship building and business discussions outside the formal exhibition environment.

The engagement programme will continue beyond the three-day expo. On 9 October, participating South African tourism businesses are scheduled to take part in focused trade engagements with leading travel agents in Nairobi, allowing them to deepen conversations initiated during the exhibition and explore commercial opportunities in greater detail.

Measuring success through outcomes

SA Tourism says it is increasingly focused on evaluating the quality of business generated through trade exhibitions rather than simply measuring participation levels.

The organisation will track buyer engagements, meetings held, qualified sales opportunities, agreed follow-up actions and post-event progress to assess the longer-term value generated through MKTE.

The aim is to determine whether interactions at the expo translate into stronger distribution networks, itinerary inclusion, increased market access and, where possible, confirmed business opportunities for participating tourism enterprises.

Africa remains at the heart of growth

As Africa continues to account for the majority of South Africa’s international tourist arrivals, strengthening intra-African tourism remains a strategic priority.

SA Tourism believes closer regional cooperation, stronger trade relationships and improved market access can unlock significant growth opportunities for destinations and tourism businesses across the continent.

“Africa already accounts for the majority of South Africa’s international tourist arrivals, but there is still significant room to grow travel between African markets,” Mahlaba said. “Improving access, strengthening trade partnerships and making more South African tourism products easy to package and book are central to unlocking that opportunity.”

Trade buyers and tourism industry stakeholders attending MKTE can visit the SA Tourism marketplace at Stand D11 at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi. Through its expanded participation, SA Tourism hopes to convert growing interest from the Kenyan market into sustained business growth for South Africa’s tourism sector and greater opportunities for emerging enterprises.

Chery South Africa has officially revealed the name of its first-ever bakkie, with local consumers choosing Grootman as the winner ahead of the vehicle’s planned launch in the first quarter of 2027.

The name, rooted in Afrikaans and meaning “big man”, is widely used in South Africa as a term of respect for someone known for their experience, reliability, and leadership. Chery says the locally chosen name reflects both the role a bakkie plays in South African households and businesses, and the characteristics the company aims to deliver in its newest vehicle.

According to Chery South Africa General Manager Jay Jay Botes, involving South Africans in the naming process was an important part of creating a local identity for the new model.

“Grootman is a word people use with respect, often for someone who has worked hard to get where they are and can be counted on. Having South Africans choose it makes the name particularly meaningful, and we recognise that it comes with expectations we will have to live up to,” said Botes.

The new bakkie is built on a dedicated hybrid platform, combining a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with electric power and four-wheel drive. Preliminary specifications indicate combined outputs of 350 kW and 800 Nm, positioning it among the most powerful alternatives in its segment.

Chery also says the Grootman will offer an electric-only range of up to 100 kilometres on the NEDC cycle, improving efficiency for shorter daily journeys.

Built with both work and lifestyle users in mind, the bakkie will feature a 3,500 kg braked towing capacity, while its load box measures 1,560 mm in length, 1,560 mm in width, and 500 mm in height. Ground clearance is rated at 230 mm when fully loaded.

A notable feature is its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, which lets owners power external equipment such as tools, appliances, and camping gear directly from the vehicle’s hybrid battery system.

The naming announcement also marks the launch of Chery’s new campaign, “The Grootman Has Arrived”, which will highlight stories and conversations around what the term “Grootman” means to South Africans.

Chery says it will release more details, including final specifications, pricing, and the local model range, closer to the vehicle’s official South African debut in 2027.

I had my first encounter with the Ford Ranger Raptor back in 2024. Looking back on my time with it, I remember it being thirsty, brilliant off-road and gloriously loud. In fact, it probably annoyed the neighbours next door. Perhaps they suffered from a case of Ranger Raptor envy because, truth be told, the 3.0-litre V6 soundtrack is hard to hate unless you’re a Karen. But I digress.

If you’re a professor looking to add a touch of excitement to your life, toughen up your image and embrace your inner bad boy, then the Raptor is a great place to start. I’m only kidding, but everything about it punctuates its tough-guy aura.

From the wide haunches to the black alloy wheels wrapped in thick all-terrain rubber, the Ranger Raptor makes a statement. Our test unit was finished in a striking sunrise-orange hue, while the twin exhaust pipes at the rear hint at its performance credentials.

Inside the Beast

Step inside, and it remains familiar territory. The cabin shares much with the rest of the Ranger line-up, albeit with unique Raptor touches such as orange stitching across the seats, dashboard and steering wheel, mirroring the bold exterior finish. The 12-inch infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use, while Ford continues to set the benchmark among its rivals with one of the most modern interiors in the segment. It has character, and the excellent 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system delivers impressive audio quality.

There’s no shortage of equipment either. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate control, USB-A and USB-C ports, a 360-degree parking camera, Terrain Management modes, tyre-pressure monitoring, hill-descent control, lane-keeping assist, seven airbags and a wireless smartphone charger. Beyond its premium feel, however, this mighty steed commands a premium price tag of R1,307,300.

Living with the Raptor

To paint a realistic picture of daily life with the Raptor, there’s one major compromise: fuel consumption. Driving conservatively in and around the city, I managed an average of 15 L/100 km. Switch into Sport mode, open up the exhaust and unleash the Raptor’s playful side, and fuel consumption climbs to between 18 and 20 L/100 km, depending on how heavy your foot is.

Power comes courtesy of a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine producing 292 kW and 583 Nm of torque. Plant your foot, and the Raptor surges forward with urgency. You can occasionally feel the effects of its 2.4-tonne kerb weight, but once momentum builds, with the 10-speed automatic transmission working through the gears in rapid succession.

The gearbox can occasionally feel a touch choppy, but for the most part, it remains responsive and well-suited to the wide variety of driving modes available. Whether you’re driving in Sport, Mud/Ruts, Sand, Slippery or Rock Crawl mode, the Raptor adapts effortlessly.

Then there’s Baja mode. For those unfamiliar, Baja mode takes its name from the legendary Baja 1000 off-road race in Mexico, where competitors in trucks, buggies, motorcycles and ATVs tackle more than 1,600 kilometres of unforgiving terrain. It’s one of the toughest off-road races in the world and attracts some of the best drivers on the planet. Va-va-voom!

The Off-Road King

Engaging Baja mode sharpens the Raptor’s responses and unleashes its full off-road potential. It’s designed primarily for high-speed dune running and desert blasting. Sadly, Johannesburg’s concrete jungle doesn’t offer many opportunities for that. Instead, I took the Raptor onto a collection of gravel, sandy and uneven roads to see how it compared with other Ranger derivatives I’ve driven, including the range-topping Ranger Platinum fitted with Ford’s 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6.

The Platinum V6 feels punchy and refined, but compared with the Raptor, it’s noticeably more restrained. This is where the Raptor’s sporting character shines through. It’s agile, corners with confidence on loose surfaces and offers remarkable ride comfort thanks to its specially developed chassis. Like its predecessor, it rides on Fox dampers. However, the latest generation features more sophisticated position-sensitive damping technology that continuously adapts to driving conditions.

Combined with the chunky all-terrain tyres, the setup is outstanding. The Raptor feels purpose-built for tackling rough terrain at speed while remaining comfortable enough for everyday duties. For something so large and imposing, it carries its weight very well.

Verdict

The Ranger Raptor is an expensive toy, and whether it’s worth the asking price ultimately comes down to personal preference.

It’s the bad boy of bakkies: unruly, outrageously loud and impossible to ignore. It commands attention wherever it goes and earns admiration from just about everyone who encounters it.

The biggest question, of course, is whether you can afford to play the game. As much as I enjoy the Raptor, the practical side of me would probably choose the Ranger Platinum V6. It still delivers plenty of enjoyment while offering greater efficiency and refinement for everyday use. The Raptor remains a niche purchase. For those who want the wildest, most entertaining Ranger money can buy, there’s still nothing quite like it.

The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) has launched a nationwide initiative providing free armed response services to all women in South Africa for 30 days, in response to growing concerns over violence against women.

The announcement follows a series of tragic murders that have left the country shocked and renewed calls for action to improve women’s safety.

AA CEO Bobby Ramagwede said the initiative is the organisation’s way of supporting women during a time of crisis.

“We see you, we hear you, and we want to help,” he said, while also urging other corporates to step up and contribute to solutions that protect women.

The service is completely free, with no hidden costs or automatic subscription after the 30-day period. Women can register via the AA website, download the MyAA app, and activate the service, which turns their phone into a mobile panic button that can summon armed-response assistance when needed.

The AA said the initiative is not a long-term solution to South Africa’s gender-based violence crisis, but an immediate intervention aimed at providing greater safety and peace of mind.

“Ultimately, it is all our duty to keep the women of South Africa safe,” the organisation said.

When shopping for a vehicle, it’s worth asking a simple question: what do you really need it to do? Is it about function or flash? Is it about keeping up with the neighbours? Or do you want a reliable set of wheels that can serve your family for years to come? I suppose that’s where the Mazda CX-60 Takumi fits in.

Mazda’s flagship SUV does not scream for attention, but from the moment I saw it, the CX-60 Takumi made an impression. Its muscular stance, upright proportions and long bonnet give it a commanding road presence. The design is clean and elegant, faithful to Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy, which favours simplicity and motion over aggressive styling cues. Our test vehicle’s striking Cherry Blossom wrap only added to its visual appeal, turning heads without trying too hard.

Interestingly, Mazda uses the Japanese word “Takumi”, meaning “master craftsman”, to identify the highest-specification model in the CX-60 range. After spending time with it, the name starts to make sense.

Slide into the cabin, and you’re greeted by an environment that feels warm, solid and classy. The Nappa leather upholstery is wonderfully soft, while the overall fit and finish is among the best Mazda has ever produced. The steering wheel feels perfectly weighted in your hands, and every touchpoint conveys quality.

And then there are the buttons. Yes, actual physical buttons. In an era where manufacturers seem determined to bury every vehicle function inside an oversized touchscreen, Mazda has thankfully resisted the temptation. Climate controls and key functions remain easy to access without navigating endless digital menus. It is a simple feature, yet one that makes a noticeable difference when driving.

The CX-60 Takumi comes equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a Bose 12-speaker sound system, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and a 360-degree camera system. I would have liked heated seats as well, which feels like an omission at this price point. Overall, everything feels intuitive and easy to use.

Shifting gears, the drive stirred the soul. Power comes from Mazda’s impressive 3.3-litre straight-six turbodiesel engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Producing 187kW and 550Nm, it delivers power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Numbers only tell part of the story.

Behind the wheel, the CX-60 feels excellent on the road. It’s effortless. The straight-six engine delivers power smoothly, while the abundance of torque makes overtaking and highway cruising stress-free. Mazda claims a 0-100km/h sprint of 7.3 seconds and fuel consumption of just 4.9l/100km. While those headline figures are appealing, I averaged 8.0l/100km in mixed driving conditions, mostly in Johannesburg’s urban sprawl.

As for driving dynamics, the steering feels precise and engaging. Despite its size, the CX-60 remains enjoyable to drive, with a level of driver involvement that many rivals struggle to replicate. At just over R1.1 million, the CX-60 Takumi faces formidable competition. Buyers will inevitably compare it with vehicles such as the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Lexus NX. All carry a higher price tag, while the CX-60 Takumi comes jam-packed with features for less.

It may not have the badge prestige of some of its European rivals, but it offers a compelling package. For families seeking a premium SUV that quietly gets the job done without demanding attention, the Mazda CX-60 Takumi delivers without breaking a sweat. And sometimes, that’s exactly what makes it special.

South Africa’s motorsport community is continuing to mourn the loss of championship-winning driver Robert Wolk, with Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie describing his death as a tragedy for both the sporting fraternity and the country.

In a statement released on Saturday, McKenzie paid tribute to the 41-year-old racer, who built a reputation as one of South Africa’s most successful and respected motorsport competitors over a nearly three-decade career.

“Robert Wolk was a champion in every sense of the word,” McKenzie said, praising the driver for competing at the highest levels of South African motorsport and representing the country with distinction. Wolk’s achievements include the SA Formula Volkswagen Championship (2013), Formula 1600 Championship (2015), back-to-back SA GTC Championship titles in 2021 and 2022, and the SA Touring Cars Championship in 2024. Earlier this year, he added another milestone to his racing career by securing his second Simola Hillclimb King of the Hill title.

Beyond his success on the track, Wolk was recognised for his contribution to motorsport through the awarding of both Junior and Senior Protea Colours, reflecting his standing within the sport and his commitment to excellence.

McKenzie extended his condolences to Wolk’s family, friends and the wider motorsport community, acknowledging the impact his passing has had across the country. He also voiced support for ongoing efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Wolk’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow drivers, teams and supporters, many remembering him not only as a fierce competitor but also as a passionate ambassador for South African motorsport.

The 2026 Festival of Motoring at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit highlighted a growing reality in South Africa’s automotive sector: Chinese manufacturers are no longer competing solely on price.

From electric vehicles and hybrids to range-extender technology, premium SUVs and high-performance bakkies, Chinese brands arrived at this year’s show with one message: they intend to compete across every major segment of the market.

While established manufacturers including Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford and Suzuki continue to dominate sales charts, the Festival of Motoring suggests that the industry’s centre of innovation is shifting east.

Chinese brands expand their ambitions.

Brands such as Changan, Chery, Geely, Dongfeng, Omoda, Jaecoo, GWM, iCaur, LDV, JMC and BAIC unveiled a broad range of new products aimed at South African consumers.

Unlike previous market entries that typically focused on affordable SUVs, exhibitors showcased fully electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid models, range-extender electric vehicles (REEVs), premium SUVs and utility vehicles.

Among the standout models was the Changan Deepal S05 REEV, which combines a 1.5-litre petrol generator with a 27kWh battery pack. Changan claims a total driving range exceeding 1,000km, including up to 200km of electric-only driving.

For South Africa, where public charging infrastructure remains limited, range-extender technology may offer a practical transition between conventional petrol vehicles and fully electric transport. The S05 is expected to launch locally in November.

Electrification takes centre stage

One of the clearest themes across the festival was the variety of approaches manufacturers are taking towards electrification. Rather than pushing consumers exclusively towards battery-electric vehicles, manufacturers are increasingly offering multiple options.

Dongfeng’s Forthing Friday will be available as both a fully electric vehicle and a range-extender model with a claimed driving range of up to 1,300km.

Similarly, the iCaur V27 combines a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine, battery system and dual electric motors. The company claims combined outputs of 339kW, electric-only driving of up to 150km and total range exceeding 1,000km.

Meanwhile, Suzuki used the festival to showcase its first fully electric model, the e-Vitara, signalling that even established manufacturers are embracing the global shift towards electrification.

Chery targets mainstream market dominance

Among the Chinese manufacturers, Chery’s display stood out for both its range and ambition.

The company introduced the compact electric Chery Q, which offers a claimed driving range of up to 400km and is expected to start from R349,900, potentially making EV ownership more accessible to South African consumers.

The brand also showcased the Tiggo V, a seven-seater SUV featuring a third-row seating arrangement that can be converted into a cargo area.

Perhaps the most significant unveiling, however, was the KP31 hybrid bakkie. Powered by a combination of a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine and electric assistance, the KP31 is claimed to produce 350kW and 800Nm while offering up to 100km of electric-only driving and a towing capacity of 3,500kg. The model puts Chery in direct competition with established bakkie leaders, including Toyota, Ford, Isuzu and Volkswagen.

The battle for South Africa’s bakkie market

Chinese manufacturers are increasingly targeting one of South Africa’s most lucrative vehicle segments.

Geely used the festival to showcase the Riddara, expected to become South Africa’s first fully electric bakkie. In flagship specification, the vehicle produces up to 315kW and 595Nm, while offering a payload exceeding one tonne and towing capability of 3,000kg.

JMC, meanwhile, presented the Grand Avenue, a more traditional diesel-powered double cab aimed at buyers who remain hesitant about electric alternatives.

The result is a rapidly expanding segment where buyers are being offered more technology, greater performance and broader powertrain choices than ever before.

Legacy brands still dominate sales

Despite the surge of new products from Chinese manufacturers, sales figures show that established brands remain firmly in control of the South African market.

According to August 2026 new vehicle sales data:

• Toyota sold 13,814 vehicles

• Suzuki sold 6,505 vehicles

• Volkswagen Group sold 5,668 vehicles

• Ford sold 3,202 vehicles

• Hyundai sold 3,034 vehicles

• Chery sold 2,763 vehicles

• GWM sold 2,594 vehicles

• Isuzu sold 2,531 vehicles

• Jetour sold 1,952 vehicles

• Kia sold 1,783 vehicles

These figures highlight an important distinction: while Chinese manufacturers may be winning headlines and generating excitement through new products, legacy brands still benefit from established dealer networks, trusted after-sales support, and proven resale values.

Competition benefits consumers

The growing presence of Chinese manufacturers is creating one of the most competitive periods the South African automotive sector has experienced in decades.

Consumers now have access to a wider range of vehicle technologies, including affordable EVs, hybrids and range-extender models that were largely absent from the market only a few years ago.

At the same time, questions remain around long-term parts availability, dealer support, resale values and which brands will establish a lasting presence in South Africa.

The verdict

The 2026 Festival of Motoring demonstrated that legacy manufacturers are not losing the battle for South Africa’s car market. Toyota, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Ford remain dominant players with substantial customer loyalty and market share.

What has changed is the level of competition.

Chinese brands are entering the market faster, introducing new technologies more aggressively and giving consumers far greater choice across nearly every segment.

They do not need to overtake the established manufacturers overnight. If the pace of product development seen at this year’s festival continues, they may force the rest of the industry to evolve.

For South African motorists, that could be the most significant outcome of all.

Mazda Southern Africa has officially unveiled the all-new Mazda CX-5. At The Capital on the Park in Sandton, the launch was an exciting, fun-filled evening with entertainment and plenty of fanfare. It was clear that Mazda is aiming high and wanted guests to experience the excitement surrounding the brand and one of its most important nameplates.

So what’s new?

The new CX-5 brings a refresh in design, technology, safety and practicality, while remaining true to Mazda’s Jinba-Ittai philosophy, which focuses on creating a natural connection between driver and vehicle.

The new CX-5 has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating under the organisation’s 2025 testing criteria, recording scores of 90% for adult occupant protection, 89% for child occupant protection, 93% for vulnerable road-user protection and 83% for safety assist systems.

The SUV comes equipped with an extensive suite of advanced driver assistance technologies, including:

• 360-degree camera system

• Blind Spot Monitoring

• Lane Change Assist

• Mazda Radar Cruise Control

• Proactive Driving Assistance

• Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

• Mazda’s i-Activsense safety technologies

A step into the tech era

Inside, Mazda has done away with the classic rotary dial and buttons, replacing it with a touchscreen infotainment system and a digital driver’s display. One could say the Japanese marque is moving with the times and embracing the tech-focused direction many buyers now expect.

Under the bonnet sits the familiar naturally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol engine, producing 132kW and 240Nm of torque. Power has been bumped up slightly compared with the outgoing CX-5. Mazda also says aerodynamic improvements have reduced drag compared with the previous model. Engineers have also improved sound insulation and reduced mirror vibration to create a more refined cabin environment.

On the styling front, the SUV adopts a more sculpted exterior design, complemented by premium interior finishes, ambient lighting, roof rails and a panoramic sunroof on selected derivatives.

Mazda is also introducing a new exterior colour, Navy Blue Mica, developed specifically for the latest CX-5. The colour reveals different characteristics under changing light conditions, showing brighter blue tones in direct sunlight while maintaining a deeper navy appearance in darker settings.

Ownership benefits include MazdaCare, which comprises a five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty, a five-year unlimited-kilometre service plan, and five years of roadside assistance. Eligible customers will also have access to Mazda’s Courtesy Service Programme, which provides a replacement Mazda vehicle during scheduled servicing, subject to availability.

First impressions

With its blend of technology, safety, and comfort, Mazda believes the all-new CX-5 will strengthen its position in South Africa’s highly competitive midsize SUV segment.

On paper, the updates look promising. While we only got a static look at the vehicle during the launch event, the real test will come once we get behind the wheel. We are certainly looking forward to spending proper time with the new CX-5 to see whether it delivers and how it stacks up against some of the toughest rivals in the segment.
