Everyone loves a good bakkie. Its versatility is unmatched — whether tackling the wilds of the Kruger or navigating the concrete jungle of Johannesburg, a bakkie does it all. I found that in the Ford Ranger Tremor. It towers above sedans, hatches, and SUVs; potholes barely register, and curbs are no obstacle.

My week with the Ranger Tremor was a treat. Comfortable, modern, and silky smooth in operation, it’s powered by the 3.0‑litre V6 turbodiesel producing 184kW and 600Nm of torque mated to a 10-speed gearbox. The refinement and sheer muscle set it apart from every other bakkies I’ve driven. And it does shine on and off-road. It’s comfortable and compliant, and handling tough terrain is a breeze, although expect fuel consumption of 12l/100km. It’s a thirsty beast.

To note, Ford South Africa has phased out the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel, which originally powered the Tremor. This streamlines the line-up to focus on the 3-litre V6 powerplant and the updated 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel. The bi-turbo’s departure stems from durability concerns tied to the Panther engine family’s “wet timing belt” design, which has now been replaced with a timing chain in the single-turbo for improved reliability.

But now that the Tremor has been given the big-boy V6 powerplant compared to rivals like the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, GWM P300, Isuzu D-Max, and, well, the Volkswagen Amarok (the same car with different badging), I’d say the Ranger holds its own. It’s not as rough and tumble as you’d expect. Its comfort is where it shines against the competitors, surpassing them.

Moving on to the looks and cabin. I couldn’t help but admire every angle of this bakkie: our test unit looked clean and mature in grey with black off-road General Grabber tyres; the squared-off proportions are a chef’s kiss, accompanied by the C-shaped LEDs in front. There’s ‘Tremor’ badging all -round, followed by black exterior bits on the door handles and mirrors, and the Tremor gets its own unique honeycomb grille.

Stepping inside, the Tremor offers a neat, well-appointed cabin that leans into its rugged character. It’s not as plush as the high-spec Platinum, but it feels purposeful, with modern, hard-wearing plastics and a design that matches its rugged aesthetics. Highlights include all-weather rubber mats, the responsive Ford Sync 4 infotainment system with a 12-inch touchscreen, an 8-inch configurable digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, and a six-speaker audio setup that, while not audiophile-grade, is more than adequate. The Tremor-branded vinyl seats reinforce the hard-wearing, purpose-driven theme Ford is aiming for.

Despite its utilitarian touches, the Ranger remains one of the plushest bakkies you can buy. My lingering concern is long-term durability once service and warranty plans expire — maintenance will be key to seeing how well it holds up over time. And then there’s the sting: at R1,045,600, the Tremor is expensive. But in today’s market, affordability is relative — nearly all modern bakkies carry premium price tags. For those who can afford it, the Tremor delivers capability and comfort in equal measure. For the rest of us, owning one feels as distant as a Sandton penthouse.

International para-athletics sensation Puseletso Mabote reached another career milestone on Sunday evening, 23 August 2026, taking home the prestigious Sportsman of the Year with a Disability award at the South Africa Sport Awards.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Sports for Students with Disabilities Club star continues to captivate global track and field audiences with his explosive performances in the 100m sprint and long jump.

Mabote’s journey to the top of world athletics is rooted in sheer resilience. At age ten, a life-altering road traffic accident led to the amputation of his right leg. Refusing to let circumstances define his future, Mabote channeled his energy into sport.

His path took a transformative turn when he connected with the Jumping Kids Prosthetic Fund, which introduced him to para-athletics and provided the high-performance prosthetics needed to compete at an elite level. Just two years after picking up the sport, he donned the national colors at the IWAS World Games in Portugal, marking his international debut.

Since that breakthrough, Mabote’s rise through the global ranks has been meteoric:

Record-Breaking Speed: Set an African record in the T63 100m sprint with a blistering time of 12.05 seconds in Paris.

Global Ranking: Solidified his status as the world’s second-fastest T63 sprinter in 2025.

Leaping to Greatness: Holds the T64 long jump African record with a massive 7.01m leap, earning a No. 4 world ranking in the event.

At just 20 years of age, Mabote had already represented South Africa at two Paralympic Games, earned World Championship medals, broken world and continental records, and become a World Champion. His achievements reflect exceptional commitment, discipline, and perseverance, making him one of South Africa’s brightest sporting talents.

During the SASAPD National Championships, in March 2026 in Stellenbosch. Mabote rewrote the record books by setting a new World Record in the Men’s T63 400m, clocking an incredible 1:00.74. This historic performance demonstrated not only his sprinting ability but also his versatility across multiple disciplines, further establishing him as one of the world’s premier para-athletes.

His relentless drive has taken him across the globe, flying the South African and UJ flags high in elite competitions across Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium, India, and on home soil.

This award amplifies Mabote’s extraordinary raw talent and work ethic, and the power of sport to redefine potential in the face of adversity.

The latest model represents a comprehensive refresh in design, technology, and interior sophistication rather than a radical mechanical overhaul.

Polokwane gave me the perfect excuse to leave Johannesburg behind. For the first time in five years, I was finally heading to Capricorn FM to do my Friday motoring segment in person instead of over the phone. The strange part? I’d never met my producer, Chris Chuene, or Kabelo Motswi, who goes by the pseudonym King Bash, the presenter who hosts my segment, the Capricorn FM Adventure Motoring Experience, every Friday at 12:30.

Yet when I finally met them, it felt like we’d known each other for years. With a reason to travel and a capable set of wheels beneath me, I packed my bags, charged the battery and pointed the EX30 Cross Country north.

What should have been a three-hour drive turned into almost six. For the first stretch I cruised at around 80km/h, partly because I was enjoying the Harman Kardon soundbar and partly because range anxiety had the better of me. My conservative driving paid off, with the EX30 averaging an impressive 12.8kWh/100km.

My first stop was Euphoria Golf Estate, roughly halfway to Polokwane. The charging facilities were excellent, and while the car topped up, I stretched my legs, grabbed a bite to eat and admired the wildlife roaming the estate. Ostriches and buck wandered freely, making it a relaxing place to recharge both myself and the car.

I had left Johannesburg with the battery at 98%, showing an estimated range of 350km. By the time I reached Euphoria, after about 170km, I still had enough charge left, thanks to my relaxed driving style. After a quick recharge, the display now showed an estimated 490km. That certainly boosted my confidence. Back on the road, darkness quickly settled in. Traffic became more demanding, with impatient drivers, trucks pulling out to overtake and unpredictable traffic flow.

This time I settled into a cruising speed of around 100-120km/h. The EX30 Cross Country is seriously quick, sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds, and overtaking slower traffic was effortless. Power comes from a twin-motor all-wheel-drive electric drivetrain, delivering a staggering 315kw and 543 Nm of torque. To put that into perspective, a base-spec Porsche 911 Carrera 992.2 can do a 0- 100 km/h sprint in 4.1 seconds, but of course, at the top end this EV is no match for the mighty Porsche. The EX30 Cross Country is governed to 180km/h

On the road, it’s important to note that with an EV, the harder you drive, the faster the battery drops. A couple of hours later, I arrived at my Airbnb with around 150km of range remaining. After a long day behind the wheel, sleep came easily. The next morning was crisp and cold as I made my way to Capricorn FM. The team gave the EX30 Cross Country plenty of attention, admiring its rugged styling and futuristic design before I finally met King Bash in person.

We even took the Volvo for a short drive before heading into the studio, where we spoke about the realities of taking an EV on a road trip. The EX30 Cross Country certainly stands out. Compared with the standard EX30, it gets tougher-looking body cladding, raised ground clearance, 19-inch matte black wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres and Volvo’s Vapour Grey paintwork. It looks purposeful without trying too hard.

Inside, the cabin still smelled factory fresh. When I collected the vehicle, it had covered just 250km, and by the time I handed it back, the odometer read 1,476km. Needless to say, we covered plenty of ground together.

That said, the cabin won’t appeal to everyone. Volvo has built its reputation on creating some of the most comfortable interiors in the business, but the EX30 takes a different approach. Sustainable materials replace traditional leather, giving the cabin a more minimalist feel. It looks modern, but it doesn’t have the warm, lounge-like atmosphere many people associate with the brand.

The biggest adjustment is the infotainment system. Almost every function is controlled through the central touchscreen, including mirror adjustments. Once you learn the menus, it becomes easier to live with, but there is a learning curve. I also found the constant driver monitoring system overly sensitive. Combined with the need to navigate touchscreen menus while driving, the constant beeps can become frustrating. It’s one of those cars where you’ll want your playlist sorted before setting off.

Storage, however, is well thought out. There are generous door bins, a hidden glovebox, useful centre storage and USB-C ports for both front and rear passengers. Rear legroom is adequate for a small family, although taller passengers may find it tight on longer journeys. The boot is practical, but don’t expect class-leading luggage space.

Safety is where the EX30 Cross Country shines. It comes loaded with technology including Adaptive Cruise Control, Pilot Assist, Lane Keeping Aid, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Traffic Jam Assist, a Driver Alert System, Forward Collision Warning, Cross Traffic Alert, Collision Avoidance and One Pedal Drive. Parking is equally straightforward thanks to a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors and Park Pilot Assist.

After spending more than 1,200km behind the wheel, the EX30 Cross Country proved that an EV road trip is entirely possible with a little planning. Yes, charging stops take longer than filling up with petrol, and yes, you become more conscious of your speed and energy use.

But the quiet cabin, strong performance and low running costs made the journey surprisingly enjoyable. For me, though, the biggest highlight wasn’t the destination or even the car. It was finally meeting the voices I’d spoken to every Friday for the past five years. The EX30 Cross Country gave me the perfect reason to make the trip.

The RMB National Rowing Squad has departed for Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to compete at the 2026 World Rowing Championships, the event that brings the international classic rowing season to a close.

Taking place at the Bosbaan from 24 to 30 August, the Championships will see more than 850 athletes from 64 nations chase medals across 23 boat classes, in what is shaping up to be one of the biggest editions in the event’s history.

South Africa travels to Amsterdam full of confidence after a season that has already shown the squad is capable of racing with the best in the world.

Building Momentum: Lucerne and Henley

At the World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne in June, Courtney Westley and Katherine Williams finished 8th overall in the women’s pair, Paige Badenhorst finished 9th overall in the women’s single sculls, and Chris Baxter finished 15th overall in the men’s single sculls — results that put the squad firmly in touch with the world’s leading nations heading into the northern hemisphere summer.

That form carried through to the Henley Royal Regatta, widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious regatta. Both South African scullers reached the semi-finals. Badenhorst produced what many called the race of the regatta, going stroke for stroke with Austria’s Magdalena Lobnig - an Olympic bronze medallist and two-time world champion in coastal and beach sprint rowing - before losing by just half a length.

Baxter pushed eventual finalist Diogo Gonçalves of Portugal all the way in his semi-final, while Westley and Williams fell in the quarter-finals to Italy’s Laura Meriano and Alice Codato, who went on to win the event outright.

Coming so close to the sharp end of the world’s most competitive regatta has given the squad every reason to believe a big performance is coming in Amsterdam.

Three Weeks of Final Preparation in Tzaneen

In the final push before departure, the squad has spent the past three weeks together on a training camp in Tzaneen, Limpopo - a regular preparation base for South African rowing.

The three uninterrupted weeks have given the crews real time on the water to sharpen race fitness, fine-tune their rhythm and race plans, and build crew cohesion ahead of the biggest regatta of the year.

Watching the group in Lucerne and at Henley, the improvement was already clear, as they pushed some of the best crews and athletes in the world all the way.

“This preparation has given the team even more confidence heading into the World Championships,” said national coach Andrew Grant.

Age-Group Depth Signals a Bright Future

South Africa’s strong 2026 season has not been limited to the senior squad. At the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Duisburg, Germany, both the South African men’s four and women’s four reached the A-Final - the country’s best-ever result in the men’s four, and, by all available records, the first time South Africa has ever entered a women’s four at U23 World Championships.

The results are the product of a new programme designed to give South African rowers based overseas, many of them competing on university scholarships in the United States and Europe, the opportunity to represent their country.

With crews now able to draw on talent from both home and abroad, the pathway has already delivered encouraging results — and points to a bright future, as this generation looks to carry forward South Africa’s proud Olympic rowing history, which includes medals in Athens, London and Rio.

There are mountain bike races, and then there is the Nuvo Wild Ride — an epic coastal mountain bike adventure that takes riders along the rugged and beautiful stretch of Eastern Cape coastline between Morgan’s Bay and Umngazi River Bungalows.

Perhaps “race” is the wrong word. The Wild Ride is less about speed and more about spirit. It is an experience of cycling, swimming, carrying, pushing, problem-solving and persevering. Riders cross lagoons with their bikes, haul them up steep dunes and hills, navigate thick sand, contend with tides, and face the ever-changing conditions of one of South Africa’s most spectacular wild coastlines.

I have been fortunate to enjoy many adventures over the years — climbing big mountains, diving some of the world’s great reefs, and participating in a number of mountain biking, hiking and paddling trips.

But the Wild Ride has earned a place among my most memorable experiences. It is not necessarily the most difficult or the most remote adventure I have undertaken, but its unique combination of challenge, beauty, discomfort and unpredictability struck a deep chord with me.

For much of the ride, your shoes are full of sand, your body is wet and salty from swimming through lagoons, and your bike is being punished by sand and seawater. And yet, that is exactly what makes it so special.

The event attracts adventurers — people who understand that discomfort and uncertainty are not things to avoid at all costs, but the very ingredients that make an experience meaningful.

This year, for the first time in 26 editions of the event, a stage had to be cancelled. Torrential rain turned parts of the route into something unforgettable. Jeep tracks became rivers, streams swelled into torrents, and driving rain made visibility difficult. Equipment failed, teams got lost, and riders and bikes were swept off their feet in swollen river crossings.

Yet what stood out most was not the hardship, but the camaraderie – not the suffering, but the joy of overcoming. Teams formed human chains across rivers. Competitors shared equipment, helped repair bikes, encouraged one another and made sure that others were safe. In those moments, the Wild Ride was a powerful reminder that adventure is not only about personal courage, but also about community and self-discovery.

As Headmaster of a school I could not help but see strong parallels between this experience and our educational philosophy. At Treverton College our slogan is “Education is an Adventure”.

We believe that young people grow when they are challenged — physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Confidence and resilience are not built by removing every obstacle from a child’s path, but by helping them face meaningful challenges and discover that they are capable of more than they imagined.

The Wild Ride reminded me that the reward of doing hard things is not found only at the finish line. It is found in the struggle, in the problem-solving, in the teamwork, and in the quiet satisfaction of having endured. These are lessons worth learning — on a bicycle, in a classroom, and in life.

Cars are simply a way of life—most special moments happen behind the wheel. Now, five years into motoring journalism, I am grateful. Sometimes I do like to share, and at this point, I am closing in on 300 cars I have driven, written about, and pondered. There have only been a handful that have truly tugged at the strings of my heart. And it was a question that played on my mind: could the Volkswagen Golf 8.5 GTI be one of them?

You see, the new 8.5 GTI is no stranger. There's a 50-year legacy etched in stone with the iconic three-letter word: GTI. My uncle, Morgan Naidu, was, in fact, a motoring journalist. He was one of the best in the game but unfortunately lost his battle to cancer in 2012.

He was on the rise with his motoring publication, Ride and Drive, and had decades of experience as a journalist. He was a veteran storyteller. When he died, Ride and Drive died too. The name vanished into thin air. I firmly believe that if Morgan were still alive today, it would be operating on a Top Gear level. And let me be clear—I mean the iconic trio of Clarkson, Hammond, and May, not the current Top Gear.

We’ll have to carry the baton. Back in the day in a car-shoot, Morgan featured every Golf GTI generation, from the first-generation Mk1 right through to the Mk6. One can only imagine what he’d think about the 8.5 GTI. He said in the beginning, “Hot hatches don’t get any hotter than the Golf GTI,” and that shootout sparked the inner petrolhead in me while watching it as a scholar. Thank you, Uncle Morgan. So, onto the 8.5 GTI. What’s new? And is it any hotter?

Well, slight tweaks have been made. At first glance, you could easily miss them. The front headlights are slightly sharper. At night, there’s a new illuminated VW badge that integrates beautifully with the headlights.

Our test unit wore the gorgeous new 19-inch Queenstown alloy wheels—a fresh design. Talk about fresh shoes. Look a little closer, and you’ll notice the rear taillights have also been subtly revised. The Golf GTI is, without doubt, a firm favourite in Mzansi and has reportedly sold well over 2.3 million units worldwide. It’s still hot if you ask me.

Underneath, it’s been bumped up—not by shocking numbers—but by a modest 15 kW, taking power from 180 kW to 195 kW, while torque remains unchanged at 370 Nm. Volkswagen has further refined the electronic front-axle differential lock and steering. Under hard acceleration, it’s really hard to tell the difference. I found no noticeable change from the outgoing Golf 8 GTI, which I remember prancing around Zwartkops Raceway during Volkswagen’s Night Driving School in 2023.

Though I wish I’d had the chance to drive the 7.5 GTI, I spoke to one owner, a friend of mine who hosts my motoring slot on Capricorn FM every Friday at 12:30, King Bash. He felt the new 8.5 GTI is missing the “Vrrpah.” “I want something fun,” he told me. “I want to play with those pipes, Prashirwin, as I cruise around town.” While it may be lacking from that perspective, the 8.5 GTI shines on the road. It has grunt, pace, and excellent handling, especially through the corners.

One thing to note is that the Vrrpah isn’t really there anymore. Instead, you get faint pops and bangs when the car is in Sport mode with the ESC switched off. That’s when the GTI comes alive. It’s grippy and slick in the way it puts its power down. It encourages you to keep driving, and you do. Launch control is a breeze, with just enough theatre from the spinning front wheels.

There’s a real skip in the GTI’s step. It can get thirsty when driven hard, averaging around 17 L/100 km. But settle into Eco mode and cruise, and it’ll hover around 8 L/100 km. The seven-speed DSG gearbox remains responsive and immediate. There’s urgency and, mind you, despite being a touch quicker than the outgoing Golf 8, I couldn’t feel the difference. The new 8.5 GTI reaches 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the previous Golf 8 GTI managed it in 6.4 seconds.

I ditched fuel economy for the week and soaked in as much speed as I could. As a daily runner, though, the GTI is splendid. The hatchback practicality is decent—road trips, school runs, you name it. The GTI fits every role with ease.

The cabin isn’t going to stir your soul. Instead, it’s minimal, well built, and improved, mainly thanks to the new MIB4 infotainment screen sitting proudly in the middle. Sure, it still looks slightly tacked on, but this screen is shared with the new Tayron and Tiguan—just sharing that for interest’s sake.

You get the signature GTI seats with their red accents, more GTI touches on the steering wheel and dashboard, and an interior that’s pleasantly uncluttered. The only switchgear you’ll really find in the centre is the stubby gear selector, the Start button, and the electronic parking brake. From a comfort standpoint, it’s cushy and comfortable. Truthfully, the standard speakers are adequate, but not enough to say they’re wired for sound.

Space for rear occupants is ample, although I did find it slightly snug sitting behind my own driving position. I’m 5 ft 8, and it felt just a little tight. The Golf 8.5 GTI has the GR Yaris firmly in its sights, which is raw and, realistically, a much harder car to live with every day.

Looking at the hot hatch segment as a whole, it really does seem like the Golf 8.5 GTI is here to stay. The Mégane RS is gone. The Civic Type R is still around, although it feels almost non-existent these days. You simply don’t see many of them on South African roads anymore.

So, to Vrrpah or not to Vrrpah? I say Vrrpah. You can purchase the Golf 8.5 GTI from R908,000, and for that, it’s pretty much fully loaded as standard. And does the new 8.5 GTI make my list? No.

Though I really liked it, I never completely fell for it. It ticks almost every box. It’s practical, quick, refined, comfortable, and still one of the best all-round hot hatches money can buy. But sometimes the cars that stay with you aren’t the ones that do everything well—they’re the ones that make you feel something every time you look back after parking them.

The Golf 8.5 GTI never quite crossed that line for me. That said, I have no doubt it’ll continue to dominate the sales charts for years to come... as long as Volkswagen doesn’t cut it and go fully electric.

For decades, bodybuilding has been regarded as a male-dominated sport, with men often taking centre stage in competitions. However, a new generation of women athletes is challenging that narrative by proving that strength, discipline and excellence have no gender boundaries.

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus women bodybuilders made their mark at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Bodybuilding Championships held at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University on 27 June 2026, dominating several categories and playing a key role in the team securing second position overall.

Competing against seven universities from across the country, the Mahikeng Campus team narrowly missed out on the overall title, which was won by their sister institution, the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus.

The Mahikeng women delivered a record-breaking performance, taking control of the women’s divisions and positioning themselves among the leading student bodybuilders in the country.

Sinazo Ndabeni claimed first place in the Ladies Beach Bikini Over 163 cm category and was crowned the overall Ladies Beach Bikini winner. Bokang Matsetela secured first place in the Ladies Bikini Over 166 cm category and earned the overall Ladies Bikini title.

Rejoice Letsoalo took first place in the Ladies Wellness Over 166 cm category and claimed the overall Ladies Wellness title, while Sindiswa Mpelane won the Ladies Bodyfitness Open category.

Their performances earned them national recognition, with Sinazo, Bokang, Rejoice and Sindiswa being selected to represent Team USSA for bodybuilding.

Mahikeng Campus bodybuilding coach Tshepo Baloyi said the results reflect the growth of women’s participation in the sport and the dedication of the athletes.

“As a coach, I am proud to have worked with such a talented group of women who continue to challenge perceptions about bodybuilding. They conquered all five ladies’ divisions at the USSA, setting a new record by bringing home six gold medals and three overall titles. Their success is a result of discipline, consistency and commitment to their craft,” said Tshepo.

“Bodybuilding is where beauty meets fitness, but behind the stage performance is months of preparation, sacrifice and mental strength. Sinazo, Bokang, Rejoice and Sindiswa have shown that strength is not defined by gender. These athletes have become one of the strongest pillars of the Mahikeng Campus bodybuilding team and their achievements will inspire more women to participate in the sport,” he added.

Tshepo said the achievements also demonstrate how women’s bodybuilding continues to grow in university sport, creating opportunities for more female athletes to step onto competitive platforms.

The USSA results highlight a changing era in bodybuilding, where women are not only participating but also setting new standards in the sport.

With their latest achievements and Team USSA selections, the Mahikeng Campus athletes have cemented their place among the top university bodybuilders in the country, while continuing to inspire the next generation of women in strength-based sports.

South American tourists visiting here also recorded exponential growth, being led by arrivals from Brazil, Tourism Minister Patricia De Lille said adding that in May 2026 South Africa recorded a 40.6% rise in visitors from Brazil, from 4 737 to 6 660.

“We are particularly encouraged by the strong growth from Brazil as LATAM Airlines prepares to launch its direct service between Cape Town and São Paulo. Every new air route creates new opportunities for tourism, trade and investment.

“This latest expansion is another vote of confidence in South Africa’s tourism market and aligns with the Cabinet-approved Tourism Route Development Marketing Plan, which is focused on strengthening direct connectivity and unlocking new source markets,” added Minister de Lille.

LATAM Airlines commenced its new non-stop service between Cape Town and São Paulo on 2 July 2026, operating three flights per week, further strengthening connectivity between South Africa and Latin America.

Between January 2026 and May 2026, South Africa’s international tourist arrivals increased by 12.8% to 4 220 586 when compared to the same period in 2025. The data further reveals that within the first 5 months of the year, the Africa market grew by 14.7% and European arrivals increased by 11.1%.

“These results affirm that our decision to invest in tourism infrastructure, improve ease of access and diversify our tourism offerings across the country is paying off. In May 2026, South Africa recorded 861 750 international arrivals, marking 7.2% growth when compared to the same period last year. These arrivals have also been boosted by a 12.1% increase in overseas tourists choosing South Africa. The USA leads the list at 41 846 tourists, followed by the UK at 22 160.

It is with enormous pride and a heart full of gratitude that I congratulate Bafana Bafana on completing what has been the most extraordinary chapter in the history of South African football.

Yes, we are knocked out. Yes, the pain of a late goal in Los Angeles will sting for a long time. But no result and no final scoreline can take away what this team has given our country over the past three weeks.

Bafana Bafana reached the knockout rounds of a FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history. In their fourth World Cup appearance, after exits in 1998, 2002 and on home soil in 2010.

These young men did what no South African team has ever done before. They made it through, and that is not a small thing. That is history that can’t be erased, written in the gold and green on the world stage in front of billions of people.

I also want to take this moment to congratulate Canada on a well-deserved victory, and to extend the Ministry’s congratulations to all three host nations – the United States, Canada, and Mexico – for the outstanding manner in which they have staged this tournament.

This has been a World Cup that has captured the imagination of the world, and the hosts deserve enormous credit for that.

We have been made to feel at home in both Mexico and the USA, who opened their arms to South Africa and showed us great love. We will never forget it.

The manner in which this team qualified made it even more remarkable. Written off after a 2–0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match, they showed character, resilience, and tactical intelligence to draw with Czechia and, in what many will rightly describe as one of the greatest nights in our football, beat South Korea 1–0 to book their place in the Round of 32.

South Africa from fourth to second place in the group and announced our arrival on the global knockout stage.

I want to pay special tribute to Coach Hugo Broos. When the final whistle blew against South Korea, Broos collapsed to the turf as the bench flooded the pitch. That image captured his years of work, belief, sacrifice and love for this team and this country.

Coach, you have earned your place in the history of South African sport. What you have built here is something that will endure long after this tournament.

I must also pay tribute to the South African Football Association for its commitment to this campaign.

Results like these are the fruit of sustained investment in players, coaching staff, and the development of the game.

To Ronwen Williams, who led from the front and commanded the goalkeeper’s jersey with authority and calm. To Teboho Mokoena, whose penalty against Czechia proved nerve when it mattered most. To Thapelo Maseko – you are a young man whose personal story of setback and comeback must inspire us all.

At the FIFA World Cup, you scored the goal that made history. Every young person in South Africa who has been told they are finished and that their moment has passed must know your name and your story.

To every player in our squad: South Africa sees you and we thank you. We are proud of each of you – not just for the moments of glory, but for the moments no one saw: the early mornings, the doubts you needed to overcome and the commitment to your country.

The manner of our exit, so close to extra time, will always be painful. But this is sport, and the margins at the top level are small, and they are brutal. What we must take from this, and what the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture is committed to facilitating, is that the lessons from this campaign are properly captured, honestly assessed and used to build on what has been achieved.

There are many things we could have done better. There are decisions, tactical and otherwise, that we must analyse with rigour and without defensiveness. This is not a criticism but a commitment to growth.

More AFCONs are coming. Future World Cups are coming. If we learn from these experiences with the same courage this team showed on the pitch, we will go further still in years to come, and we must.

Honest reflection also demands that we hold up a mirror to ourselves as a country.

Bafana Bafana has shown us what is possible. They have shown us how much we are leaving on the table. The talent that produced Oswin Appollis, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Relebohile Mofokeng and this whole generation of players exists in every township, village and school in South Africa.

The nations we hope to beat are finding their talent and investing in it. Too much of ours is going undiscovered. Too many future stars are being lost because we do not find them early enough, because our school sport infrastructure is not yet

what it should be, and because the pipeline from the playground to the professional game has too many gaps in it.

This tournament must be the moment we commit, seriously and with resources behind the commitment, to transforming school sport in this country.

This brings me to something I feel more strongly about today than ever. Sport is not merely entertainment or recreation. It is big business – an untapped economic sector, a nation-building tool and a powerful vehicle for social transformation.

What we have witnessed over the past three weeks was South Africa occupying global prime time, generating tourism, trade, and investment interest, and projecting an image of a confident, capable and compelling nation to billions of viewers.

We cannot afford to treat football development as a discretionary line item. I am committing this Ministry to working across government to find additional resources for sports development, with school sport as the priority. The return on that investment – measured in talent, national pride, economic activity and the futures of young South Africans – will compound powerfully.

This is not the end but a new beginning. South Africa is a football nation. We always were, and today, the world knows it and will remember it.

It was the year 2024 when I trekked to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, alongside my legendary father, Edwin Naidu, and it was in a pre-facelift Volvo XC90 finished in Nardo Grey.

The sunny views, lovely beaches, and kilometres etched onto the tarmac as we simply glided and wafted to our local hotspots — honestly, some of the best memories. Simple moments. And as I look back now, it’s crazy to think it was two years ago. Where does time go?

Still, I vividly remember the drive and the music pumped through the Bowers & Wilkins sound system. At the time, George Michael dominated my playlist, especially “Spinning the Wheel” and, of course, “Where Did Your Heart Go.” We drove, roved, and simply enjoyed being present. Good food too. Back then, I was only starting out. Shoutout to my dad for always going above and beyond. To put it simply: he gave me my set of wings.

But anyways, the refreshed 2026 Volvo XC90 arrived on my driveway and I immediately felt those memories flood back in. And yes, that’s my sweet lady Jess standing next to the beastly XC90. She’s also slowly ditching the BMW love in her soul and finding the Volvos more fitting these days. So what’s been updated? A mild makeover, a few nips and tucks, and mostly an enhancement in tech — but that’s about it.

Visually, the front end looks noticeably different. The Thor’s Hammer LEDs — yes, that’s an actual Volvo term — appear sharper, while the grille now features a more intricate pattern. I quite like it. Our test unit also looked charming in the metal, finished in black with 21-inch steel-cut alloy wheels. I’ve always found Volvos to be regal and classy. They’re not flashy or attention-seeking, rather understated and sophisticated.

The cabin is where the XC90 really dials it up for me. It’s a luxury haven on wheels, with an atmosphere that feels warm and cosy. Plush cream-coloured leather seats, massage functions for the front occupants, heated seats, and even a heated steering wheel all add to the experience. Then there are the finer details. The Orrefors crystal gear lever remains a lovely touch. The biggest upgrade inside is undoubtedly the infotainment screen, which feels far more modern and intuitive than before. It’s easy to operate too.

And then there’s the Bowers & Wilkins sound system. My goodness, it pumps. One feels completely immersed, and it’s probably one of the best audio systems I’ve had the good fortune of testing in a while. Safety has always been a huge part of the Volvo identity, too. It also boasts a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, underlining Volvo's long-standing reputation for building some of the safest vehicles on the road.

But the drive is where the Volvo XC90 T8 still wins me over. The same 2.0-litre supercharged and turbocharged engine paired with electric motors remains lovely, quick, and effortless. The air suspension also plays a massive role in making the XC90 feel like it’s simply floating along. Same recipe, just slightly better. During my week of testing, I mostly used it as a grocery getter with the occasional long stint from Roodepoort back to Sunninghill. But honestly, this car feels like it’s begging for a proper road trip. Sadly, time and work always seem to be the bane of my existence.

Fuel economy isn’t shabby at all, either. I managed around 10L/100km without charging the hybrid battery. Charge it properly, and you can get up to 70km of pure electric range, which definitely helps reduce fuel consumption quite substantially. I also occasionally dialled it into Power mode, which lowers the car slightly and unleashes the full 340kW and 709Nm of torque. Needless to say, the 0-100km/h sprint feels seriously rapid at just under five seconds.

Needless to say, it was a joy sampling the XC90 again, and you can have one for around R1.9 million. It goes head-to-head with rivals like the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q8. I suppose if you dare to go against the grain and ditch the traditional German trio, then the XC90 makes a compelling case.

Luxury Without Trying Too Hard

We had travelled down to Durban with our parents, Edwin and Brenda, while my brother blasted Ballin’ by Snoop Dogg and The Dramatics through the speakers.It’s funny how certain vehicles become attached to moments in your life. The EQV brought some of those feelings rushing back — memories of simpler days, long drives, and youthful ambition. Only this time, the experience arrived in near silence.

And that’s perhaps the most interesting thing about the EQV. Unless you spot the subtle badging, it’s actually difficult to tell it’s electric.That, oddly enough, is part of its charm. In reality, the EQV is a tidy-looking van with unmistakable premium flair. It’s unapologetically large, boxy, and takes up road space with confidence. I quite like its bread-loaf proportions. The front end especially stood out for me. You’ve got illuminated lighting stretching across the grille, sleek LED headlamps, attractive alloy wheels, and our test unit arrived finished in a striking shade of red that suited it perfectly. Add the panoramic sunroof and tinted windows, and the EQV really stands on business. It feels luxurious without trying too hard.

A Proper Lounge On Wheels

Step inside and the EQV immediately leans into its role as a premium people mover. The cabin feels classy, purposeful and exceptionally well insulated. There are leather seats, heated seating for passengers, fold-out tables in the rear, and a genuinely excellent Burmester sound system.

In fact, the audio setup ended up becoming one of my favourite parts of the experience. While charging the vehicle, my better half Jess and I connected a tablet to the speakers and watched Your Friends & Neighbours, effectively turning the EQV into our own private cinema on wheels.

It handled the role surprisingly well. From a practicality perspective, there’s also loads of space. The seven-seat configuration makes perfect sense for families, airport shuttles, executive transport services or long-distance travel, while the cargo area is absolutely massive. More than anything, though, the EQV genuinely feels like a luxury lounge on wheels.

Smooth, Silent And Effortless

Of course, this isn’t a performance machine. Nobody is expecting a large electric van to behave like Speedy Gonzales, but the EQV has more than enough power for its intended purpose. Out on the road, it feels smooth, quiet and refined. Despite its size, it’s also remarkably easy to drive.I spent most of my time navigating the chaos of Fourways traffic rather than escaping onto an open road, but even there the EQV impressed with its composure and effortless nature.

Underneath it all sits a 93.3kWh battery pack producing around 150kW and 365Nm of torque. Mercedes-Benz claims a range of more than 350km, which is respectable for something this large. Because it’s electric, the power delivery feels immediate and seamless, while charging times are fairly reasonable depending on the charger you use. That said, living with an EV in South Africa can still occasionally feel like a range-anxiety-inducing irritation. And at roughly R2.3 million, the EQV firmly positions itself in the luxury space.

Does The EQV Make Sense?

Truthfully, I’d probably still lean toward something like a Mercedes-Benz V300d fitted with monoblock wheels, or even a Mercedes-Benz Vito Tourer. But the EQV occupies a unique corner of the market. There aren’t many direct rivals either. Ultimately, the EQV makes the most sense as a premium shuttle — whether for luxury hotels, airports, executive transport services or buyers fully committed to the EV lifestyle. And if you’re willing to go against the grain and embrace electric motoring in a full-sized luxury van, then the Mercedes-Benz EQV might just tickle your fancy.

Inside, the EQV transforms into what feels like a luxury lounge on wheels, offering leather seating, heated passenger seats, fold-out rear tables, a premium Burmester sound system, and generous space for seven occupants.

The discussion also explores the EQV’s smooth and quiet driving experience, powered by a 90kWh battery producing 150kW and 365Nm, while its effortless electric performance and claimed range of over 350km make it a compelling option in the growing premium EV space.
