Traditionally, the 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class have been direct rivals to the A5, but the landscape is shifting. The German trio is now facing serious pressure from Chinese brands like Chery, Haval, Omoda and Jaecoo, which are rapidly gaining traction in South Africa. According to Naamsa, buyers are flocking to SUVs and crossovers for their value and practicality. Sedans are becoming niche — but for those who appreciate a low-slung driving experience, the A5 still delivers.

And deliver it does. The A5 feels composed, planted, and effortlessly smooth. There’s a confidence in the way it tackles corners — something I found lacking in a Haval H6 GT. Yes, the Haval is quick and might even trouble a Volkswagen Golf GTI in a straight line, but it doesn’t offer the same reassuring composure you expect from a German sedan. Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre TFSI engine producing 146kW and 340Nm. It’s lively enough for everyday driving, though not particularly thrilling, with a 0–100km/h time of 7.8 seconds.

The ride is undeniably smooth, but fuel consumption came in at around 11L/100km. To be fair, the test unit had just over 10,000km on the clock, so there may still be some room for improvement. Visually, the A5 is a winner. Finished in Ascari Blue and sitting on 19-inch Audi Sport wheels, it turns heads with ease. The Sportback design adds a layer of practicality, blending coupe-like styling with usable space.

Inside, however, things aren’t perfect. Yes, you get three screens — a digital cluster, infotainment display, and a passenger screen — which give the cabin a modern, tech-forward feel. But look closer, and you’ll notice some creaks and questionable build quality, particularly below the infotainment system. At nearly R1.4 million (with options), that’s hard to ignore.

The cabin itself is clean and well laid out, complemented by features like the panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency — a R38,000 option. It doesn’t open, though, making it more of a visual feature than a functional one.

This particular A5 is fitted with R279,400 worth of optional extras, including Ascari Blue paint, the panoramic roof, Tech Pro and Infotainment packages, as well as upgrades like sport seats, ambient lighting, and added convenience features. It also benefits from several no-cost extras, such as the Bang & Olufsen sound system, digital key, and a suite of driver assistance systems.

Premium? Absolutely. But also pricey — and that’s where Audi may have missed the mark. In a market increasingly driven by value, the A5 risks being overshadowed. It’s a strong product, no doubt, but one that highlights the growing pressure legacy brands face in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Johannesburg — Q&A with George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader SA: Driving Change, Transparency, and the EV Shift in South Africa

One of the most influential executives in Southern Africa, George Mienie, the dynamic CEO of AutoTrader South Africa, discusses the evolution of the automotive market, the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), and the future of buying and selling cars online.

Mienie reflects on two decades of industry change — from print to digital, combustion to electric — and how AutoTrader is shaping a more transparent future for motorists.

Q: How has AutoTrader evolved from print to digital, and what challenges came with that shift?

MIENIE: It’s been a long journey — I’ve been part of it for over 22 years. The move wasn’t dramatic; it came through constant, incremental improvements. Each change built more trust and transparency for consumers. We’ve always asked: how can we provide people with more accurate information about cars, pricing, and sellers? That’s what’s driven our evolution.

Q: What trends are shaping buyer behaviour in the used car market?

MIENIE: Buyers today are far more informed. They expect transparency, especially on pricing. They want to know if a deal is fair and how the car will depreciate. Thanks to our massive dataset, we can offer those insights in real-time. Trust also matters more than ever. That’s why we introduced dealer ratings and reviews: to hold sellers accountable and reward the good ones.

Q: How has the perception of Chinese-made cars changed?

MIENIE: Chinese cars have made significant strides in the eyes of South African consumers. A few years ago, there was still scepticism about build quality and long-term reliability, but that’s changing fast.

Brands like Haval and Chery are leading the charge, producing vehicles that are well-specced, stylish, and competitively priced. I’ve observed how buyers are reacting — the value-for-money equation is resonating. If these cars were only 80% as good as they are at 80% of the price, they wouldn’t be selling as well as they are. The fact that they’re moving serious volumes shows that people are trusting the product more than ever before.

Q: Is South Africa ready for a second-hand EV market?

MIENIE: We’re getting there. The BMW i3, for instance, has held value surprisingly well after initial depreciation. But the market lacks affordable EVs. Most are priced over R500,000 — out of reach for many. Once we see EVs in the price range of a Suzuki Swift, the second-hand market is expected to take off. Brands like BYD or Chery might unlock that.

Q: What’s holding back EV adoption — price, infrastructure, or something else?

MIENIE: All of the above. EVs are only cheap to run if you can charge at home. I saved thousands charging my Jaguar I-PACE at ±R2–R3 per kWh. But public charging can triple that cost, making it no cheaper than petrol. Most South Africans don’t have garages or plug points at home, especially in complexes. Without affordable, accessible infrastructure, the value proposition falls apart.

Q: How is AutoTrader educating consumers about EVs?

MIENIE: We’ve taken that responsibility seriously. We conduct annual EV surveys and publish detailed reports, all of which are freely available. When we lack data, we ask both the public and the industry. Our goal is to lead the conversation and debunk myths around range anxiety, charging, and cost.

Q: What will it take for EVs to go mainstream here?

MIENIE: Price is the tipping point. If an EV is priced like a Suzuki Swift, everything changes — even with current infrastructure limitations. The lower service and running costs make EVs attractive overall. Until then, the market will remain niche, limited to wealthier buyers with access to home charging.

Q: Are there any standout cars that balance tech, efficiency, and price?

MIENIE: The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is a great example. It’s affordable and offers the benefits of electrification without needing charging stations. Hybrids are a strong stepping stone for many consumers before they fully commit to EVs.

Q: What’s next for AutoTrader?

MIENIE: We’re constantly evolving, with a focus on increasing trust and transparency. That means better vehicle histories, verified dealer reviews, and live pricing data. On the B2B side, we help dealers make smarter stock and pricing decisions. Long-term, we aim to let buyers do everything online — even test drives and delivery could eventually come to them.

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a leader?

MIENIE: This might surprise you, but I don’t believe in the advice that tells people to “follow your passion.”

In my view, the better advice is:
“Find what you’re good at, become the best at it, even if you don’t love it — then use that to gain financial freedom, and then follow your passion.”

Passion doesn’t pay the bills. Skill and excellence do. Once you’ve got that foundation, the freedom to pursue passion becomes a reality.

In the words of the nineties pop band Roxette, the Volkswagen Taigo R-Line has a look. Not only does it dazzle, but it excels in fuel economy despite a 40-litre tank and performs exceedingly well on the road.

One would say it’s almost like the charming Polo, except it’s larger and taller and blends with the coupé design. Striking in deep black pearlescent, it looks impressive.

The endearing Taigo is for young and up-and-coming professionals. Youthful families may also love the space and beautiful ride.

What makes the Volkswagen Taigo unique from the T-range? The chassis is based on the same platform as its counterpart, the T-cross, but with an edgier style and a goal of standing out from the ordinary crowd.

Starting with the front end, with its precise and fine lines, it’s almost as if this car is grinning from ear to ear—very charming. Given that it’s the top-spec model, one would also take note of the powerful LED matrix headlamps accompanied by the R-Line badge. Yes, the R could easily be for Riveting!

Sitting on 18-inch Misano alloys, followed by the robust matte black body cladding, the one we drove was irresistible. The car’s overall dimensions are well-balanced and offer a modern and futuristic look, especially the illuminated taillight bar, which is an elegant touch.

Boots space offers 440l, slightly more than the T-Cross, which measures about 377l of capacity. The Taigo’s sporty roof slope doesn’t compromise rear headroom; even full-sized adults have ample room.

Tech-wise, the flagship R-Line model offers an eight-inch infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, stainless steel pedals, rear privacy glass, a Beats sound system, wireless charging, navigation, voice control, and wireless smartphone connectivity. And if you’re feeling the summer breeze, throw in that panoramic sunroof.

Apart from the thrills, it is a safe car, to say the least; if you opt for the IQ Drive safety package, you will get features such as lane-change and blind-spot assist, adaptive cruise control, and emergency braking.

Since our test unit had the Comfort package, we were indeed spoilt. We had a reversing camera, keyless entry and start, and a semi-autonomous parking assistant function.

The Taigo range does not offer leather seats, but the top-spec R-Line has cloth upholstery with a diamond print in grey hues. Beneath the bonnet, it’s powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG) transmission.

Behind the wheel, it feels almost like the Polo, but the additional ground clearance contributes a tangible superiority in comfort. It felt smooth and refined in daily city driving situations. The only qualm is at a standstill; the turbo lag is noticeable, but it’s not a significant issue.

Power output is 85kW and 200NM. It may appear weak with its figures, but in hindsight, it has plenty of kick due to the turbo; it can do 0-100km/h in 10 seconds. Now fuel consumption is quoted at 5.4l/100km, but real-world figures are in the 6l-8l/100km range- depending on how heavy one’s foot is.

With a starting price of R482, you can pick up the Taigo Life 1.0 TSI or the Taigo Style 1.0 TSI for R520,500. If you want, the range-topping R-Line model is R545,200. With all the optional extras, ours was R609,800.

At the Taigo’s price point, you may consider a Mazda CX-30, Hyundai Kona, or Toyota C-HR, vehicles with a similar crossover-coupé aesthetic. Overall, the Taigo is a lovely specimen of the VW brand, but the price and optional extras make it a costly option in the consumer’s eyes. But if your wallet is willing, Taigo has plenty to offer.

Only some get a second chance to relive one’s matric dance experience, especially a swift two years after it happened.

I remember the intense pressure of ensuring everything was ready; from the car to date and what I had planned to wear on the day. Well, I managed to get everything prepared in the nip of time.

Sadly, I got left at the altar. Nevertheless, I still looked stunning in a fine assortment of blue, accompanied by my legend of a brother, Brenwin Naidu, who took me there in the all-new Mercedes Benz G400d. I felt like Bond posing for pictures with the mesmerising, latest iteration of the Austrian-made behemoth.

Fast forward to the present, a good family friend, Dhiasha Naidoo, the head girl of Curro Waterfall and quite the brainy academic herself, asked me to accompany her. Of course, I was excited; a chance to dress up again, get a fantastic car organised and accompany a dashing young lady.

The choice of car was the main ingredient. If you remember the brand, I would have taken my cute Volkswagen UP, but that’s like attending the dance in a Tazz.

Fortunately, we pulled the heartstrings and organised a marvellous R2.5 million Lexus LX500d and the ravishing red Alfa Romeo Tonale Speciale, which sells for a not-too-inconsiderate R800 000. My first experience with the Italian beauty was exceptional and made the final decision harder.

Yes, the roads are less rife with the Alfa Romeo brand. Taste is peculiar to one’s pocket, and a desire to follow the German or Japanese crowd. Class is something else. Driving around in the Tonale, people were intrigued by its sheer beauty.

And on the class front, we also had the Lexus LX500d, which was “gangster”, if one could say, with all the bells, it also looked the part of being Luxe. I spent hours contemplating which one would be best.

In the end, we gladly used both. We turned up to the dance in the Lexus LX500d for the matric dance and went to the after-party in the funky Alfa Romeo Tonale. Dhiasha was spoilt for choice.

We arrived in the ice-white Lexus LX500d on the evening of the dance. It was a looker. So was Dhiasha.

Before the dance, I was enamoured by the mesmerising wheels that got us here. The cabin of the Lexus LX500d was lovely. It seemed minimal yet sophisticated in nature. The upholstery and leather applications were delectable. And the feel behind the wheel was simply supreme.

I came across several BMW, Porsche and Mercedes Benz. Not one to be with the in-crowd, I must say the Lexus LX500d stood out among the commoners in the parking lot. Mind you; the Alfa Romeo Tonale would have done the same.

The welcoming crowd rolled out the red carpet. Students rushed to support and cheer. I am curious if it was for the vehicle or for myself and Dhiasha. We looked gorgeous. There is an Indian custom to turn salt if one has too much of eyes on them to ward off evil spirits. We needed an ocean of salt. I was in a blue suit matching Dhiasha in her stunning blue dress.

As the red carpet was rolled for us, we set foot on it, making an entrance as we walked gracefully towards the venue while the school paparazzi took the pictures. The crowd cheered, ushering us in.

It felt like déjà vu. Only the last time, the belle of the ball flew solo, landing on a field in a helicopter that could have been a pumpkin carriage. It was nostalgic; the same sad speeches droned on, the laughter, the banter, and those funny heart-wrenching moments of release as one embarks on a brand-new journey.

Yet, it was epic. There was plenty of dancing sandwiched in between scrumptious meals. Bonding is inevitable over good food. When there’s bad food, we still bond – but complain and wish that everyone could cook like mom.

On the evening of the dance, Dhiasha was the Mistress of Ceremonies. Being an eloquent speaker (she gets it from her chirpy, smart mom), it was done quickly. Seeing the closeness and bittersweet moments of fellow friends, teachers also hit home. The reality is that the matric dance signals that one journey has come to an end. A brand new one awaits.

While moving on is not easy, ask me. I will tell you, maybe it is from my dad’s jeans, er genes. Witnessing the joy on the face of Dhiasha’s parents (her cool Dad must think he needs to get a gun to ward off the admirers urgently) and her little sister Jarita was special. Dhiasha’s grown, accomplished much, and even spoke to Chinese astronauts in space last year. Her future is bright as the red Alfa Romeo Tonale we switched after the dance for the Lexus LX500d.

Of course, I was the designated driver for just a few close friends and club-hopping responsibly. Since I drink nothing but tea or cappuccino with almond milk, I revelled in being the bodyguard, date and driver.

The experience provided a flashback to my matric dance two years earlier. It was a bittersweet blur. But no hard feelings. Or, in the words of Robbie William, there was no regret. They don’t work. I remember my brother Brenwin Naidu being there for me, fetching me in a swanky Mercedes Benz G400d and me dressing to the hills in my blue assortments of velvet, black and tan shoes. I looked the part. But that was then.

Matric Dance 2023 – thanks to Dhiasha – or her mom Rohenie, who asked Brenda, my mom, who then asked my dad, Edwin.

This was the ultimate way to re-write history, smile, and enjoy the moment. Inevitably, the wheels to get to the dance are an integral part of every story. Every car tells a story as one’s bumpy or easy school ride draws close. As Dhiasha Naidoo reaches for the stars, my two cents are that one must choose the path carefully.

If you ask nicely, I may be available in 2024 – the Volkswagen UP is always faithful too, if you need an escort.

The tech-friendly Jaecoo J7 is China’s latest attempt at dominating the South African road.

Buoyed by the Haval’s success, its sister, the Chery, the Jaecoo, as its name suggests, is on the prowl. Not your average cougar, this Jaecoo, in German, means a mixture of hunter and cool.

It may not be everyone’s favourite Jagermeister tipple, but it has plenty to keep one’s head spinning well.

Over the past week, I sampled the recently launched vehicle, and a few thoughts lingered. It was impressive with its tech-laden cabin, bold exterior cues, and fair pricing. You’re not paying an arm and a leg for all the optional extras, as you would in premium German brands. I like that aspect.

With three models to choose from, the Vortex and middle-grade Glacier, I had my run-of-the-mill Inferno in top-spec guise. It costs a cool R679,900. If you eliminate your blinkers, you will find a lot more bang for your buck, as many would say.

Even I had preconceived notions that the cabin would feel cheap and not provide the same spark as a Benz or Beemer.

But it was delightful and modern and dazzled the heart of passenger Kagiso Mangolele. He was in heaven, to say the least, soaking it in like a kid at a candy store. But snapping back to reality, I put it to the test and gave it the full attention it deserves.

Now, bells and whistles are present, like wireless smartphone charging, a 360° panoramic camera system, a head-up display, and an integrated dashcam.

The infotainment screen was the most giant screen I have ever seen in a car, precisely 14.8” hovering in the middle centre console. It was straightforward to use, although sometimes it can be laggy. Nonetheless, I liked the simplicity of the layout, and all configurations, like climate controls, can be accessed from there.

There’s also a handy Android assistant. You activate it by pressing the robot icon at the top of the screen. You can ask it to open Windows or Google search for anything your heart desires.

When I was in the cabin, I relished the comfy seats. There was ample room for rear occupants, too. The high-flying Inferno had a heated and leather-trimmed steering wheel, privacy glass, inter-seat airbags, an automatic tailgate, and all-wheel drive, while the Vortex and Glacier are front-wheel drives.

Visually, when you look at it, it is a charming, attractive SUV. The 19″ alloys were perfectly steel cut; I am tooting the horn a bit, but they looked stunning. A bold front-end grille, almost Jeep Cherokee-like, towards the side very, much like a Ranger Rover with the retractable door handles, and some have pointed out that towards the back, it looked like a Porsche Macan, don’t shoot me; I’m just the messenger.

Now, safety systems are impressive, and some include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane-departure warning, intelligent high-beam control, rear cross-traffic assist, and more.

All Jaecoo J7 models are powered by a turbocharged 1.6l petrol engine producing 145kW and 290Nm mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Driving dynamics wasn’t much fanfare for me; it needed refinement as the 1.6l turbo petrol motor tended to bother me with the high revs in the overtaking process on the highway.

However, you can coast and cruise comfortably on the road when it’s not hot and bothered. You also have the luxury of having a driving mode selector: Sport, Eco, Normal, and Off-road. Another qualm was on uneven or unfavourable road conditions; the suspension felt firm.

Fuel-wise, it was fair to achieve 9l/100km in my daily commutes; you can even get it in the early 8l/100km.

The Jaecco J7 can go off the beaten track. I didn’t have time to take it there, but Chery markets the J7 as the model to buy if your active lifestyle takes you off the main roads and onto gravel paths. This model is afforded an off-road mode, a 21° approach angle, a 29° departure angle, 200mm of ground clearance, and 600mm of wading depth.

Can one say being paired with the Jaecoo J7 was a match made in heaven? I must put it out there: I’ve driven many cars over the last two short years, about one hundred, and I did take a liking to the Jaecoo J7; it was a car that gives a lot for less but needs some more refinement driving-wise to make it a well-rounded contender in this competitive SUV segment.

The Jaecoo J7 competes with the Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, Haval H6, and its shared counterpart, the Cherry Tigo Pro 8.

In the words of Depeche Mode, Kagiso was in Heaven. Of course, we return to Earth swiftly when the vehicle is collected.

The Chinese motor manufacturers are bucking the trend and making their mark in South Africa. Currently, five Chinese car firms are operating in the country. They are GWM, Geely. Haval, BAIC and Chery.

The elegant OMODA C5 was our small SUV when Uncle Brian and Auntie Vijay visited recently to coincide with a working visit by Sershen, my little brother from another awesome mom.

The eldest son of Brian and Vijay, he also grew up in front of the Naidu, making Grove-End Drive, Phoenix, his second home, annexing the Naidu siblings for better or worse. His recent visit was different. The beautiful folks were around to spend precious time with Sershen before he returned to the dumpsters of Trumpland.

The wonderful Naidoo was fetched in style in a fancy BMW few can afford, so it’s best not to mention it or the adorable driver. But the Naidoo remained in dreamland in the OMODA C5, the elegant car from the CHERY stable, with plenty to rave about. It has a futuristic look, almost like a spaceship. The OMOADA C5 does not look like anything in the CHERY stable, which returned to South Africa in 2021.

Typically, one associates premium with the Germans, but they’ve fallen off their perch a bit. Mercedes Benz and Audi seem dated as their PR recruits. It is COP28, so let’s park the hot air. But it’s just a pity that some brands are stuck in the old South Africa where white is right. “If you’re brown, hmm, stick around. If you’re black, get back, get back.” At a high level, Merc and Audi epitomise the racism endemic to South Africa for the past three decades. Pity. Racism is a story that will fly on another day with obvious analysis to support it.

The point is premium cars are not the monopoly of the pithy Germans. Yes, BMW never lost when it comes to premiums. Class is permanent, as they always show. The OMODA C5 oozes premium. It’s the spacious, well-decorated interior; the car has a 1.5-litre engine, kicking out 115 kilowatts of power, with fuel consumption at 6.9 litres per 100, though we averaged 10 litres per 100km. In terms of safety, it has all one needs to keep one safely cocooned from harm should anything go awry.

The OMODA C5 looks stylish. Uncle Brian was impressed. He visualised how he would redesign the car to fit his purpose, saying this OMODA C5 would be transformed into an excellent people mover. Uncle Brian is not a feisty one like Jason Statham. But he, too, is the transporter. Uncle Brian takes one to one’s final resting place. The head of North Coast Funeral Services is an undertaker with a smile.

Auntie Vijay will tell you he is a charming man. Sometimes, he charms snakes. Uncle Brian was once featured globally on National Geographic after a snake was dying to keep warm in one of the hearses parked in the garage in Woodview, Phoenix.

Uncle Brian is often the last man standing, the final human face presiding over the farewell to many a loved one. He has a few modest black vehicles, but accesses stretch limousines on demand. The bigger, the better the request from those saying goodbye to the departed. Do people really want to go out in style on the last ride? And we’re not even talking about the cost of the coffin. Should families choose to soothe their conscience because they did nothing when the person was on the planet? Just asking for a friend. Give me an unmarked car without any razzmatazz. That also means don’t invite Fikile Mbalula draped in his horrendous bumblebee outfit. Sorry honey!

Uncle Brian should revamp the OMODA C5 in his grand vision. It should be my final choice of transport even if people snigger; a lukker CHERY took him to his grave. Uncle Brian oversaw the goodbye to the remains of both my parents. I call dibs on him.

In the OMODA C5, we talked a lot about my mom, Ruby. She used to say give her flowers when she was alive – not dead. I don’t remember buying her any. I didn’t eat the almonds Ruby gave us as brain food. She must have got flowers from my dad or siblings occasionally. My mom appreciated the things I did, that much she told me. As the acting eldest, we shared much and had a deep bond. The beauty is that all siblings would probably say the same. And that’s the mark of a good mom. Thankfully, I had the same with my dad. Yes, I was special, or so I think. Amada! Auntie Vijay reminded me while riding in the OMODA C5 that Amada was a term of endearment.

The bond with my endearing mom is something one cannot describe. But I never bought her flowers. When she passed on 8 June 2008, her funeral was a flowery cry, with mutton biryani and beautiful speeches. She asked for a sealed coffin. See her when she was alive: you know where she stayed was her mantra. You know where I stay? Have you heard that line before?

It seemed like a cold yesterday when Aldrin and I returned shell-shocked from Denmark along with the fondly missed Simphiwe Piliso to see Ruby Naidu sleeping peacefully in the morgue in Verulam. Uncle Brian and Auntie Vijay were close to my mom and still talk about her all the time. So does Sershen. Children may take their parents for granted until it is too late. Then, we spend the rest of our lives mourning. And celebrating birthdays. It is only when they’re gone that you realise the groovy couple that gave birth to you is no more.

Ruby’s lectures were classic. When I drove the VW Beetle or the Hyundai seemingly fast, my backseat mom would shout “60-80” to adhere to the speed limit. When I sometimes earned money from a freelance gig or received a rare blessing from the tax person, she would say, “Put for God and don’t make dham dhoom”. It simply meant don’t blow it all in one go. Ruby’s Delight, her savoury mince dish, was among the yummiest. I tried cooking it once or twice. The reviews were less memorable than the memory of that fabulous day at Ruby’s. To use another cliché, I saw stars. I would love those days again. If only she knew. She knows.

My dad left us on 14 January 2010 – in the year of the World Cup, he scored his way to Heaven. In dealing with grief, I didn’t even get to the dearly departed siblings, Morgan and Aldrin. I was blessed that my connection to both amazing parents remained with the now late Auntie Mullie and jovial Uncle Michael on my mom’s side and the last two men standing on my dad’s side Vicky and Vis (Whitey as we called him growing up). Memories of Auntie Mullie on my phone are overwhelming. We had a blast, laughed, talked about my parents or siblings, ate and had a lesson or three. She lived like a rockstar.

One New Year’s Eve, she spent with us in Buccleuch. We had an excellent 10-year KWV brandy, sat outside by the fire, listened to music, and talked. The time flew. At about 4am, she came with two glasses of red wine, saying: “This brandy is not making us drunk; shoot the wine and go to sleep.”

If you were blessed to hear the colourful lingo of Juicy Lucy Auntie Mullie, you would know that the expletives are missing. She took the classic to another level. With all the wonderful people gone, I wonder who will be there when our time’s up.

My uncles Vicky (he used to give us German knocks as children) and Vis are the last two uncles standing. Vicky has the spirit of Mullie inspired by the Holy Spirit. I cannot gaslight my dear Uncle Vis. He is a beautiful blessing, too. Auntie Vijay, with her funky hair, reminds me a lot of my mom. She talks passionately. Always makes sense. Wisdom comes from a lady with funky hair. Just ask Leo, their parrot. Or Uncle Brian, who, having laid both parents to rest, remains my choice of transporter to the end. Ahead of massive fuel price hikes hitting hard the pockets of motorists coming into effect this week, energy efficient, greener electric vehicles are no closer to speeding onto South Africa’s roads.

Government is caught between maintaining necessary laws to ensure a cleaner environment while at the same time putting the brakes on gas guzzling vehicles that are harmful because of the amount of carbon dioxide they emit. The country currently receives R125 billion a year from taxation on fuel, giving government a headache on its efforts to go green with electric vehicles.

The increased environmental regulations, linked to climate change mitigation and better air quality, have kick-started the transition to cleaner transportation, according to a report for the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, the National Association of Automobile Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA).

But while global governments are pushing ahead with policies to support initiatives and tight environmental targets underpinned by the cheaper to own electric vehicles than petroleum-based cars over their lifetime, South Africa currently lags behind, said the report.

The country blows hot air with a solid paper trail but there’s currently no policies to go green in the short-term. Longer term plans are taking shape - slowly. But it is no comfort for motorists. With fuel prices set to rise sharply on Wednesday, many are talking about the need for a speedier transition to electric vehicles.

Statistics from the Central Energy Fund suggest that petrol is expected to rise by 87c per litre meaning that, one could pay as much as R18.26 per litre of 95 Octane in Gauteng and inland provinces and R17.54 in coastal areas in the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal. Unleaded Octane 93 may spike to R17.55 a litre on the coast and R18.07 inland. Diesel is expected to rise by 58c. It is forecast to cost R15.66 in Gauteng and inland areas, while on the coast one may pay R15.05 a litre.

But motorists hoping for relief from going electric in terms of car ownership would find that the signs are not encouraging. The 154 page report on Harnessing Electric Vehicles for Industrial Development in South Africa by Gaylor Montmasson-Clair, Anthony Dane and Lesego Moshikaro, found that the sales of electric vehicles in South Africa have remained low. Between 2010 and 2019, only 6 043 units were sold. This is less than 0.1% of new car sales.

Over the past five years, sales of electric vehicles in South Africa totalled 472 units. Plug-in hybrid vehicles sold numbered 529 units, and traditional hybrids amounted to 784 units. In the same period 1,4 million petrol vehicles and 282 712 diesel cars were sold. On Thursday, Audi South Africa unveiled its new petrol injected Audi A3 during a virtual launch. There are no plans for an electric model but next year they intend bringing to South Africa its sports utility vehicle the Audi e-tron which has sold more than 7 000 units in Europe. Every fourth electric vehicle sold in Europe has been from the Volkswagen Group: a Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Seat or Skoda.

Unfortunately, South Africa is not as ready. But the comprehensive report argues that electric vehicles offer South Africa a window to position the economy and society appropriately. In the long term, rolling out electric vehicles will bring multiple co-benefits, from lower transport costs, to reduced dependency on imported fossil fuels, to improved air quality.

“It is also the only avenue to maintain the long-term sustainability of the local manufacturing industry. In the process, some dynamics will have to be managed to minimise disruptions, particularly in the electricity and liquid fuel value chains,” the report said.

Missing the curve would have dramatic consequences on the country, as electric vehicles represent the only platform to a modern, sustainable transport system in the country and globally, the report warned.

Norman Lamprecht, Executive for Trade, Exports and Research at NAAMSA The Automotive Business Council, said another study by itself and the dtic, expects to inform the policy options and support for electric vehicle sales and production. It expects to be finalised by December 2021.

“The price differential of electric vehicles compared to internal combustion engine vehicles and limited choices available in the South African market would represent the main challenges at present. New technologies are normally expensive at first until mass adoption of the technology occurs. Once greater choice and cheaper models are available electric vehicle sales will increase,” he said.

Lamprecht said, since there was already a carbon tax on ICE vehicles with regular increases, a preferred avenue to stimulate electric vehicle sales would be to reduce taxes on electric vehicles than to increase taxes on fuel injected vehicles.

Gaylor Montmasson-Clair, Senior Economist: Sustainable Growth at the Trade & Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS), said the report raises a number of key considerations before one could embark on the electric vehicle journey in South Africa.

Montmasson-Clair said while the report was clear that there is a need for a policy framework aimed at fostering the sector, it requires consideration of multiple angles with several key questions considered, covering both market development and industrial development.

On the market development front, the first question related to how the offer of passenger electric vehicles could be supported. “This is critical to ensure that electric vehicles are available on the local market, and customers are enticed to buy them.”

The second question deals with the rollout of electric vehicles in South Africa’s public transportation system. Public transport enables society-wide benefits by bringing the technology to all, particularly low-income households.

On the industrial development front, the first question considered how to promote the manufacturing of electric vehicles(cars, buses and minibuses) in the country. Promoting an equitable rollout of electric vehicles in the country hinges on simultaneously tackling the private and public passenger transport markets, where the high upfront cost represents the biggest barrier. This could be addressed by a reduction in the VAT and/or ad valorem excise duty on electric vehicles would be an effective avenue to support the market.

The report said a partnership between Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and local banks to provide low interest rate to electric vehicles buyers would also improve the cost competitiveness of electric vehicles.

Increased local demand would also support domestic manufacturing. This is particularly evident with electric buses and minibuses. In addition, consideration should be given to a mineral beneficiation policy (such as an export tax) to support manufacturing of electric vehicle-specific components, such as batteries, electric drivetrains and fuel cells.

Overall, the report said that strong signals are required to kickstart the development of electric vehicles in South Africa.

Layton Beard, the Automobile Association spokesperson, said the association supports efforts for a better environment, including the introduction of electric vehicles, and that the current fuel price hikes would not have any impact on such a transition. He said it required a variety of factors to be considered before electric vehicles grew in popularity.

Once motorists recover from the fuel price shock on Wednesday, perhaps, there may be louder calls for faster moves towards electric vehicles?

Several global car manufacturing giants are not put off by South Africa’s ongoing energy crisis, with many putting in place strategic plans to bring out their full arsenal of electric vehicles aimed at helping the climate and transforming the future of motoring.

As an early adopter in South Africa, one of the leaders in electric vehicle production BMW, spokesperson for German carmaker Hailey Philander, said it’s pleased with the strides made by the BMW i brand in the country since introducing the BMW i3 and i8 models in 2015. “They have been a growing presence on local roads. We remain committed to providing electric vehicles in South Africa.”

Philander said it planned to launch at least four vehicles from 2021 into early 2022, including, the BMW iX, BMW iX3 and BMW i4, while from the MINI stable, which is owned by BMW, there will be an updated MINI Cooper SE.

Given the energy challenges with Eskom, when asked about the steps in place to ensure owners are not inconvenienced as a result of power struggles, Philander said their dealerships were equipped with generators to provide power in the event of a loss of electricity supply.

“ChargeNow stations at these dealerships are accessible to electric vehicle drivers, even during periods of planned or unplanned power outages,” she added.

In an energy-scarce country, Philander said electric vehicles had not been shown to have a significant drain on the power supply, and BMW was optimistic that the power supply crisis currently being experienced would be resolved.

“We do, however, need to play our part in finding ways of taking pressure off the grid – by offering solutions to affected customers. The recommendation for owners and drivers is to charge the vehicle whenever it is not in use – whether it is stationary for 10 minutes or three hours. With our My BMW or My MINI App, which is available on Android and iOS smartphones, a customer has the ability to constantly monitor the status of the car even when they are not in it,” she said.

There are six DC fast chargers at dealerships nationwide – BMW Montana (Zambezi Auto) and BMW Club Fountains (Club Motors Fountain) in Pretoria, BMW Sandton and BMW Bedfordview in Johannesburg, BMW Pinetown (Supertech Pinetown) in KwaZulu-Natal and SMG Cape Town – that allow for charging of the i3 or Cooper SE from 0% to 80% in around 45 minutes.

Electric cars are about improving the company’s carbon footprint – especially in the production of electric vehicles. “We are deliberately focussing on pure electric and hybrid options – customers choose the powertrain best suited to their needs. That is why we are relying on flexible platforms, not standalone electric platforms, in our ramp-up to electromobility,” she added.

Neale Hill, managing director of Ford South Africa, said being part of a global organisation benefits the company from looking at how others have approached electric vehicles, for example, learning from the mistakes, educating car buyers, and addressing perceptions. These include concerns over the range and charging infrastructure.

“My hope is that the government introduces larger incentives for electric vehicles manufacture, incentivising original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to re-tool plants in South Africa. Norway is the classic example of what is achievable. All we need to do is copy and paste,” he said.

Norway is the world’s biggest electric market. Last year, 54% of all vehicles were sold from the electric vehicle range. Since the 1990s, Norwegian vehicle owners have received incentives aimed at promoting the use of zero-emissions vehicles in that market.

Honda South Africa General Manager of Automobiles, Dinesh Govender, cautioned that the country’s automotive industry was still in its electrification infancy. Honda roll-outs hybrid vehicles in South Africa and the South African Development Community (SADC) region as opposed to full electric vehicles.

“We believe that hybrids will become the natural stepping stone towards electrification and build consumer confidence. Until such time comes where South Africa has a stable and sustainable supply of power, the adoption of electric vehicles will always be at the back of consumers’ minds,” added Govender.

Leading global automaker Stellantis said it has a number of electric vehicle platforms and products in production across its brands, many of which would be ideally suited to the local market across the affordability spectrum.

Stellantis said the ability to maintain a charge in electric vehicles is not based on Eskom’s ability to generate power.

“When there are fuel production outages or logistical delivery constrictions, the country’s vehicle car park does not grind to a halt. In fact, electric vehicles provide a great opportunity to flatten the electricity demand curve through overnight charging, much like our behaviour with mobile communication devices has become habitual,” the firm added.

Renault SA said it has no plans to bring electric vehicles into the local market. “ Renault SA will not be in the forefront here, rather choosing to be a “fast follower” due to prohibitive factors, such as cost and demand.“

Subaru Southern Africa also has no plans to introduce an electric model to the market.

Janico Dannhauser, Product and Pricing Manager, Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and Sub-Sahara Africa, said the new Jaguar I-PACE Black would arrive in South Africa later in the year.

“Electric vehicles are one of the fastest-growing segments worldwide. They are what consumers want and what governments and legislators are pushing for. Electric vehicles are no longer niche: they are becoming mainstream,” Dannhauser added.

Haval SA’s Vaughan Swanepoel said the Chinese manufacturer was committed to the future in terms of alternate forms of energy. “We have plans in the near future to bring our Electric Brand ORA to South Africa.”

Swanepoel said electric vehicles reduce vehicle emissions and will help in decreasing the overall carbon footprint. “The increasing threat of climate change is a reality, and through electric vehicles, we can contribute positively,” he added.

Kia South Africa’s Gary Scott said the electric vehicle technology is rapidly changing, resulting in longer driving distances and shorter charging times, and as these two aspects continue to improve, this will create greater flexibility and reduced risk for customers.

Scott said recent global repositioning of the Kia brand highlighted that its future business strategy would be primarily driven by a diverse electric vehicle offering. “But without a policy that reduces the cost of importing electric vehicles to the South African market, we believe that any sales success will be undermined by affordability constraints,” he warned.

“Over the course of the next 12 months, we will be evaluating the various electric vehicle available to us, in the hope that a policy will be implemented allowing us to start offering electric vehicles for sale in 2023.”

For the first time in its 50-year history, the all-new spacious five-door Suzuki Jimny has been given its most radical makeover. And it does not disappoint, seemingly primed to win over a generation of new fans with extra space and the added adventure it offers.

Cute and cuddly, this nifty, easy-to-drive beauty packs a mean punch. Reflecting on the launch when the five-door Suzuki Jimny arrived in South Africa late last year, the media were taken on a campsite visit to experience its rugged but refined 21st-century qualities for the launch of this model.

The illuminating excursion via Polokwane to the Tuli Wilderness next to the Limpopo River in neighbouring Botswana showed that this vehicle has plenty in its arsenal to be a serious off-roader.

This little trooper shined brightly in Botswana, quickly tackling rocky, bumpy, muddy, rough, and rugged terrains. Power was sufficient. Based on the ladder-frame chassis, it had the brute force to absorb the abrasive shocks and tactfully manoeuvre itself around unfavourable conditions. Isn’t no mountainous terrain high enough? It also helps that all five-door models are given Hill Descent Control, Hill Assist, and Brake Assistance as standard.

Ushering in three versions of the more prominent new five-door mover, the new Jimny looks different from its predecessor. But it still retains the brand’s solid and savvy DNA as we know it.

What’s different is that there are now two rear doors and a small rectangular side window between the back doors and the rear pillar. The new window allowed its creators to retain the look of the three-door model, but one enjoys seeing the light permeate the vehicle more.

Imagine that, in its fifties, there has been a slight growth spurt, too, with the overall length of the five-door Jimny from bumper to bumper going up by 340 mm to 3 820 mm.

The interior sports a clean look with the dashboard and centre console, maximising the driver’s awareness of the car’s angle on wavy surfaces.

The five-door model had ample room. Still, it incorporated the modest 1.5-litre petrol engine multi-point injection, which delivers only 75 kilowatts of power and 130NM through a five-speed manual transmission (available on the GL and GLX models) or a four-speed automatic transmission in the GLX only.

The reliable and much-loved K15B 1.5 litre petrol engine is fitted to all models in the range. It may not sound much because it isn’t, but it shines brightly on the off-roading course; however, driving on roads feels underpowered and might need a kick.

The Suzuki Jimny has a solid off-road system, including a transfer gearbox with 2H, 4H and 4 Range modes. They have also thrown in a new version of the well-known AllGrip system called AllGrip Pro. This system enhances the capabilities of the four-wheel drive system with electronic assistance, such as selective braking on wheels with no traction that emulates a traditional differential lock. It’s a nice to have, for sure.

You can bet your dwindling rand that safety is one aspect they will not compromise on the Jimny. It has the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ABS brakes, side-impact beams in all doors and three-point seatbelts for all four seats. Both rear seats are equipped with ISOFIX child-seat anchors. The Jimny in GL specification has two airbags, and the GLX models have six, including front-side airbags and curtain airbags that run the length of the cabin. All models also have standard central locking, a digital immobiliser and rear parking sensors.

But out in the wild, it shows its best side. With an impressive 210mm ground clearance, the Jimny can move over rugged rocks or stroll over sand and mud. Jimny’s ALL Grip 4WD system allows one to handle all terrains easily. In 2WD mode, it delivers smooth, quiet, and fuel-efficient performance, which is ideal for cruising in the city. Fuel-wise, I achieved a frugal 8l/100km.

But offroad is where it excels, thanks in part to Hill Descent Control, which takes the wheel when going downhill, even to the point of applying the brakes when required. All you do is trust in the vehicle and keep your hand on the steering. Pretty nifty.

There are two more outstanding things to talk about. It is wired for sound with an infotainment system, a vibrant touchscreen display, a generous 9″ size in the GLX, and a playful 7″ in the GL. You can connect seamlessly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Groove is at the heart of this. Another is that there is always a bright assortment of colours. There is a Jimny for every mood, even those with a split personality and dual colour options. You are loved.

When you hear this, Jimny is made for adventure; take it as good gospel. It is no exaggeration. This solid SUV is made for travel and getting to know South Africa better off the many beaten tracks. With Jimny, weekends can be a spur-of-the-moment drive from Buccleuch to Botswana. It’s the right thing to do!

Kingdom of Rain (The The/Sinead O’ Connor)

Mombasa, on the south coast of Kenya, was beautiful in magical bits. This was no holiday in the humid kingdom of rain. But if the conditions conspire to make it happen work can sometimes feel like a break. My luck, it wasn’t.

Nevertheless, I was blessed to have spent five days beached in a refreshingly chilled airconditioned conference room on the balmy coast annexed and ruled once by the Portuguese. One of the travel songs listening to on Sunday as I arrived on Sunday in blazing humidity was ‘Kingdom of Rain‘ by Matt Johnson of The The, and the recently departed Irish gem Sinead O’ Connor.

Mombasa, the first capital of Kenya before Nairobi usurped it, was unbearably hot as my songtrack of life. It seemed like Jozi. I would need a rapper’s delight for my Johannesburg, though. The taxis in Mombasa, however, were more bling. Those tuk-tuk scooters, were everywhere.

The roads in Mombasa had huge holes or untarred roads for many a kilometre. It looks like unconvincing work in progress. Some of the potholes in Gauteng seem minor compared to this bumpy poor excuse for a road. In some ways, it was like being home but worse. A driving experience is stomach-churning. When it rains, Johannesburg is water-logged. Imagine when a place without built up roads, flooding? The situation looks dire.

Pride Inn Paradise – and its sister hotel Pride Inn Flamingo both sport a tropical vibe. Everyone is friendly – and the internet slow. I flitted between Paradise, the conference venue, and residence for the week, Flamingo. The hotel itself was pleasant. The staff were always smiling and helpful. But sometimes they seem hard of hearing. I complained about the phone in my room not working on Sunday and every day since.

By the time I left on monsoonish Friday, the line was deadly silent. Not that anybody was going to call, of course. But it’s welcome to hear a human voice now and then when calling room service or checking if the shuttle was going to turn up without walking up and down in the heat.
When in the room cut off from the reception, you do as one does in one’s room. Just work. Especially when the television channels are anorexic. DSTV is fast losing its winning genes on the continent too. It is the new skinny gene television. I flicked between the excellent CGTN and Al Jazeera, both channels providing incisive on the ground coverage of the awful ongoing attacks on the people of Palestine. The rain was a small challenge compared to the suffering of people, women, and children, having heavy artillery pour on them in Gaza.

My well-airconditioned room 601 overlooked the palm-adorned swimming pool recreational area with views of the ocean. It oozes holiday vibes. Children and adults happily splashed in the pool. Music provided a carnival atmosphere. When the rains arrived on Tuesday nobody knew it would last all week. Dipping one’s toe in the ocean was not going to happen on this trip. Of course, one must return for that sea-sand in the toes on one’s own.
Still, in between the sessions on how the African Science Granting Councils Initiative seeks to strengthen science funding agencies in sub-Saharan Africa to support research and evidence that can be used to inform policies that will contribute to economic and social development. Less than 100 metres away from the beach, they discussed this task with vigour a costume or swimming trunks would not distract. Nobody was going to rain on the science councils’ impactful parade.

Being grateful for the opportunity to travel, I absorbed the information on over-load to enable one to champion stories of change in science throughout Africa. Yep, a blessed task.
But hotel living is a charmed life. Each morning mathematician Dr Japhet and I religiously began with the most important meal of the day. Breakfast was a mix of Wimpy meats Chowz – with more soul than the former but minus the zing you would get from the latter in Pineslopes, Lonehill. I wondered why they could not keep the wing pieces on the Cornish curry so one could fly go more often to Chowz. Hope you reading, Rodney, please put in a word with Mrs Naidoo, the chef. Their chicken is always cooked to perfection and the potatoes soft as soft should be. At Paradise Flamingo they seemed allergic to chilli. But one morning they had the best deep-fried potato and bhaja which had as much kick as the misfiring Manchester United striker Antony Martial.

In Mombasa I indulged in breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They love their fried chips. Wedges. Roasted. Potato curry. Dhall was also daily diet. I pictured myself returning home like Mr Potato Head from Toy Story. Remember, his favourite line: “What are you looking at, ya hockey puck?” The lamb skewers on a braai during one of the welcome dinners was so tasty I had more than gluttonous few helpings. All the weight lost during road tripping with my friends in July returned with a vengeance in Mombasa. I maintain it’s important to take care of the 16-pack which is why I don’t exert energy but gently swipe my card when visiting the only Virgin in Waterfall. Peanut butter berry smoothie is not good for the blood sugar levels though.

The only working out in Mombasa seemed to be eating out. The persistent rains failed to dampen the spirits. Bearing in mind the name of the conference venue, I was in Paradise every day rubbing shoulders with wonderful men and women from beautiful Africa. My growing collection of brothers, sisters, friends, and colleagues throughout the continent leaves me restless in Johannesburg. Hungry for Africa!
Sandwiched in the packed programme was a visit to Fort Jesus, built 1 500 years ago by the Portuguese. It took an hour and a half because of the weather, awful traffic, and roads if one can call it roads. Given the tropical holiday vibes, perhaps, it is more to do with the fact that the roads flood when it rains, punctuality is an empty word.

Having left later than planned for the fort, visited recently by King Charles, who also experienced heavy rains, we arrived in time for a lightning show to historical narration, and dinner accompanied by a storm. The tikka was divine. Samoosa too. The drive home reflected some of the pain and suffering Africans experience daily. As our bus headed from the fort to Shanzu Beach at around 11pm Thursday, people stood on unmarked roads waiting for transport. They looked at the bus and must feel left behind as Kenya talks the talk on economic development and sings above its weight on politics.

The image in the rain, a man, and his wife, holding a little girl, this late, made one feel that Africa is a harsh continent. But one can easily say that after a hearty meal and one’s stomach is being turned from Tintown to Timbuktu in the bus as it tried to break the one too many potholes to us gently.

Fort Jesus was a disappointment. All that effort for dinner and a history lesson. One would have preferred to have explored the dungeon at the fort more to feel the pain of those who walked 400 years before. Or just interacted with ordinary Kenyans in a suburb somewhere. By the way on the night the storms arrived with gusto, Japhet and I had dinner at the restaurant at the Flamingo. We both ordered the grilled fish. It was crispy. Mombasa was heartwarming and brief. The showers of blessings bountiful. Travel takes the body to beautiful places. The mind ramps it to destinations it can’t visit.
