There was joy, laughter and heartfelt reflection in Woodview, Phoenix, on Saturday as family and friends gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of Sarojini Govender, a beloved matriarch whose life has been defined by resilience, compassion and an unwavering commitment to education.
Born on 23 July 1926 and named after legendary Indian activist and poet Sarojini Naidu, Govender has witnessed a century of profound change, from apartheid to democracy, while remaining rooted in the values of family, hard work and community. A talented dressmaker and devoted mother of five, she worked tirelessly to create opportunities for future generations, often reminding her children and grandchildren that “in education lies your salvation”.
Today, her legacy shines through her children, grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, many of whom credit her guidance and wisdom for their success. Known for her love of literature, family gatherings and neighbourly spirit, Govender remains an inspiration to all who know her.
As loved ones honoured her remarkable milestone, they celebrated not only 100 years of life, but a century of kindness, perseverance and unconditional love — a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
