From Graduate Trainee to HR Professional – Thandolwethu Nkosi’s Journey of Growth
She believes Women’s Month is an important opportunity to recognise the achievements of women while encouraging future generations.
When Thandolwethu Nolwazi Nkosi joined Engen’s Graduate Development Programme in April 2024, she was eager to begin her professional journey. Just under two years later, she has successfully completed the programme, secured a permanent position within Engen’s Global Business Services (GBS) HR Payroll team, and is helping shape the future of South Africa’s leading energy companies.
As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, Thandolwethu’s story is a reminder of the impact that meaningful opportunities, determination and continuous learning can have in helping young women build successful careers.
Thandolwethu who currently resides in Century City in Cape Town obtained a Bachelor of Commerce (Business Management) graduate from the University of Cape Town, and later achieved another personal milestone by completing her Honours degree while working full-time.
“I am most proud of completing my Honours degree while building my career,” says Thandolwethu. “Balancing work and studies taught me resilience, discipline and the value of perseverance, and it remains one of my greatest achievements.”
Her journey through Engen’s Graduate Development Programme provided valuable exposure to different areas of human resources while allowing her to develop practical workplace skills under the guidance of experienced professionals.
“My experience on the Engen Graduate Development Programme was incredibly rewarding,” she says. “It gave me valuable hands-on experience, exposure to different areas of HR and the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals. The programme helped me build both my technical skills and confidence, laying a strong foundation for my career.”
Like many young professionals entering the workplace, Thandolwethu admits that one of her biggest challenges was overcoming imposter syndrome.
“Starting my career, I sometimes questioned whether I was capable enough, but I’ve learned to trust my abilities, embrace continuous learning and see every challenge as an opportunity to grow.”
Her personal philosophy has helped guide her through both her studies and career.
“I believe that consistency beats perfection. Small, intentional actions every day create meaningful growth over time. When I’m under pressure, I focus on what I can control, break tasks into manageable steps and remind myself that every challenge is an opportunity to learn.”
Today, as a permanent member of Engen’s GBS HR Payroll team, Thandolwethu is focused on building a meaningful career while creating opportunities that positively impact others.
“I want to live a life of purpose, continuous growth and positive impact. I’m concerned about inequality in access to education and employment opportunities, and I hope to contribute by supporting inclusive workplaces and helping others reach their potential.”
She believes Women’s Month is an important opportunity to recognise the achievements of women while encouraging future generations.
“Women’s Month is a celebration of the strength, resilience and achievements of women. It is also a reminder of the importance of creating opportunities where women can thrive, lead and inspire future generations.”
Her advice to other young South Africans is simple but powerful.
“Believe in yourself, even when you doubt your abilities. Stay curious, embrace every opportunity to learn, and remember that growth takes time. Your journey won’t look like anyone else’s, and that’s what makes it uniquely yours.”
