Injini, Africa’s leading EdTech incubator, accelerator, and think tank, has unveiled its AI for Education Venture Builder and Incubation Program, an eight‑month initiative designed to support African‑led teams in building AI‑powered solutions for the continent’s toughest classroom challenges. The program is backed by philanthropic funder Coefficient Giving.
The initiative takes pre‑formed teams from ideation to market‑ready startups, combining hands‑on expert support with funding opportunities. Its central aim: test AI tools that work in African classrooms, then back the most promising ventures with resources to scale.
“If we don’t build our own solutions now, we risk EdTech that simply doesn’t work for African classrooms,” said Krista Davidson, Executive Director at Injini. “This venture builder is aimed at closing these gaps.”
Tackling Africa’s Education Barriers
Sub‑Saharan Africa continues to face persistent barriers:
Teacher shortages
Foundational literacy and numeracy gaps
Linguistic diversity
Connectivity and affordability constraints
Injini’s program addresses these challenges from the ground up, ensuring solutions are practical, affordable, and designed for learners, teachers, and founders themselves.
Program Structure
Phase 1: Venture Build (five months) All 12 teams progress through problem validation, customer research, solution design, MVP development, and live pilots. Support includes user testing, business canvas development, branding, and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL).
Phase 2: Incubation (three months, April–June 2027) The top five teams advance to incubation, focusing on market readiness, go‑to‑market strategies, and sustainability. Each receives equity‑free seed capital of $25,000.
Eligibility and Applications
Applications are open to teams based in South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, or Zimbabwe. Teams should ideally have three or more co‑founders covering:
A builder (technical/product lead)
A context lead (deep understanding of the education problem)
A commercial/operations lead (business and execution)
Applicants must have at least two years of relevant experience and be at the ideation stage. Selected teams will attend in‑person engagements in Johannesburg, with costs covered by the program.
