South Africa’s motorsport community is continuing to mourn the loss of championship-winning driver Robert Wolk, with Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie describing his death as a tragedy for both the sporting fraternity and the country.
In a statement released on Saturday, McKenzie paid tribute to the 41-year-old racer, who built a reputation as one of South Africa’s most successful and respected motorsport competitors over a nearly three-decade career.
“Robert Wolk was a champion in every sense of the word,” McKenzie said, praising the driver for competing at the highest levels of South African motorsport and representing the country with distinction. Wolk’s achievements include the SA Formula Volkswagen Championship (2013), Formula 1600 Championship (2015), back-to-back SA GTC Championship titles in 2021 and 2022, and the SA Touring Cars Championship in 2024. Earlier this year, he added another milestone to his racing career by securing his second Simola Hillclimb King of the Hill title.
Beyond his success on the track, Wolk was recognised for his contribution to motorsport through the awarding of both Junior and Senior Protea Colours, reflecting his standing within the sport and his commitment to excellence.
McKenzie extended his condolences to Wolk’s family, friends and the wider motorsport community, acknowledging the impact his passing has had across the country. He also voiced support for ongoing efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Wolk’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow drivers, teams and supporters, many remembering him not only as a fierce competitor but also as a passionate ambassador for South African motorsport.
