SADC Deploys Electoral Observation Mission for Zambia’s 2026 General Election
Regional observers to monitor Zambia’s 13 August 2026 elections across all ten provinces, reinforcing SADC’s commitment to transparent, credible, and democratic electoral processes in Southern Africa.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has confirmed the deployment of its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to oversee Zambia’s upcoming General Election scheduled for 13 August 2026.
The move, in line with Article 8.1 of the Revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021), underscores the regional bloc’s commitment to promoting democratic governance, credible electoral processes, and political stability across Southern Africa.
The Mission will begin with the arrival of the SADC Secretariat Support Team in Lusaka on 27 July 2026, tasked with establishing headquarters and coordinating technical, administrative, and logistical arrangements.
The Secretariat will also facilitate a four-day refresher training for observers from 1–4 August 2026, followed by their graduation on 5 August. The official launch of SEOM is set for 6 August 2026, after which observers will be deployed across all ten provinces of Zambia.
Throughout the observation period, the Head of Mission, supported by the Organ Troika and the SADC Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC), will engage with key stakeholders including the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), political parties, civil society organisations, academia, and the diplomatic community.
These consultations aim to provide a comprehensive assessment of the electoral environment in line with SADC’s democratic principles.
On Election Day, 13 August 2026, SEOM observers will monitor the opening of polling stations, voting procedures, closing, and vote counting.
A Preliminary Statement outlining the Mission’s initial findings will be presented on 15 August 2026, with the public, stakeholders, and media invited to attend.
Longer-term observation will continue until 24 August 2026, culminating in a Final Report that offers a detailed evaluation of the electoral process.
SADC emphasized that the deployment of SEOM reflects its enduring commitment to peace, democracy, political stability, and good governance as essential pillars of regional integration and sustainable development. The Secretariat pledged to provide regular updates on the Mission’s activities throughout its stay in Zambia.
