UCT Council Hits the Pause Button as VC Review Battle Moves to Court
Council suspends four contested resolutions, opts to follow full legal process and signals openness to mediation while reaffirming commitment to fairness and accountability
The UCT Council convened a special meeting on 15 August 2026 to address issues arising from the Vice-Chancellor’s court challenge to four Council resolutions adopted on 30 May 2026.
After receiving legal advice, Council resolved to follow all preliminary court processes and to wait for the Vice-Chancellor to supplement his papers before deciding whether to oppose the review.
Council also confirmed its willingness to enter mediation and suspended the implementation of the four disputed resolutions until the High Court concludes the judicial review.
Council emphasised its duty to respect ongoing legal processes, protect confidentiality, including matters before the Ombud, and act in the best interests of UCT guided by fairness, accountability and institutional values.
