UFS Appoints Visionary Academic to Drive Global Strategy and Institutional Innovation
Prof Sam Tshehla to spearhead the University of the Free State’s next era of international engagement, strategic partnerships, and future‑focused institutional growth

The University of the Free State (UFS) has announced the appointment of Prof Sam Tshehla as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Strategic Initiatives, International and Institutional Affairs, effective 1 April 2026. His appointment marks a significant milestone as the university strengthens its global footprint and accelerates its long-term strategic goals
A seasoned academic leader, applied mathematician, and higher education strategist, Prof Tshehla brings more than 20 years of experience in transformative university leadership, research advancement, and institutional innovation. He currently serves as Professor of Mathematics and Dean of the Faculty of Military Science at Stellenbosch University (SU), where he has championed academic excellence, research impact, and international collaboration within a complex and high‑performance academic environment.
In addition to his deanship, Prof Tshehla serves as acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Strategy, Global and Corporate Affairs at SU, where he oversees key institutional portfolios including strategic planning, global engagement, international partnerships, student recruitment, and corporate communication. His leadership has strengthened SU’s strategic positioning, deepened global collaborations, and fostered cross-sector partnerships with government, industry, and international academic networks.
Prof Tshehla holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cape Town, an MSc in Applied Mathematics (cum laude) from the University of Limpopo, and an Executive MBA from the University of Cape Town, where he focused on leadership effectiveness in higher education environments.
As an accomplished researcher, his work spans fluid mechanics, thin-film fluid dynamics, and the mathematical modelling of physiological systems, with a particular interest in blood flow dynamics. Beyond academia, he is a respected voice in defence, security, and leadership governance, delivering numerous invited lectures and keynote addresses across Africa and internationally.

Prof Tshehla’s contributions to higher education, military science, and security education have earned him several prestigious accolades, including the Golden Star Award for Distinguished Service in Security Education in Africa, the Africa Leadership Award for Best Professor in Military Science, and recognition among the World Education Congress’s 251 Fabulous Leaders in Education. He has also completed advanced executive training programmes, including INSEAD’s Advanced Management Programme and the Nyukela Programme for senior public-sector leadership through the National School of Government.
