The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has told importers and suppliers of solar products to comply with new compulsory standards aimed at ensuring safety and reliability.
ZCSA Executive Director Gerald Chizinga said the agency held a stakeholder meeting under the theme “Enhancing Compliance and Safety of Solar Products Through Standards and Conformity Assessment.”
Chizinga said solar energy has become a lifeline for many households, businesses, and institutions, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. He said the rapid increase in solar products on the market has brought challenges that may pose risks to consumer safety and undermine confidence in renewable energy.
He said ZCSA is committed to ensuring solar products on the Zambian market meet compulsory standards that safeguard consumer health and safety and protect the environment. Through testing, inspection, and certification, the agency verifies that solar products meet these standards before they reach consumers.
Chizinga urged all importers and suppliers to embrace the compulsory standards as a tool for competitiveness. He said ensuring only safe solar products are imported, supplied, and installed will protect consumers from hazardous products, promote sustainable energy solutions, build confidence in Zambia’s renewable energy sector, and contribute to national energy goals.
